1950s TV Show Bold Journey Features Behind the Scenes Making of 3-D photos for View-Master® Reels (1957)

Ingeborg Green holds up a 3-D camera on the TV show Bold Journey

A behind the scenes look at what it took to take 3-D photos for View-Master® reels was filmed in the 1950s for the TV show Bold Journey. A video of the episode titled Ingebor in Hollywood featuring Ingeborg Green is available on YouTube posted by iCandy TV.

Bold Journey aired from 1956 to 1959. It was produced by the American Broadcasting Company. The 30 minutes show was filmed in black-and-white and hosted by John Stephenson. A funny production blooper occurs at the very beginning of the episode when Stephenson holds up a View-Master® viewer, clicks down the advance lever and holds it down while describing "there in gorgeous color is a 3-D sequence of exciting films." Everyone knows that when you hold down the lever on a View-Master® viewer you can't see the slides because the images are covered by the advance mechanism.

Space Comics 3-D on the Mickey Rooney Show (1954)

Mickey Rooney reading Three Dimension Space Comics on The Mickey Rooney Show

The influence of 3-D comic books was highlighted in the Sept. 4, 1954 episode of the TV series, Hey, Mulligan, also known as The Mickey Rooney Show. Mickey Rooney and his friend Freddy blow themselves up in an effort to reach the moon. They've been reading too many comic books and seem to believe that they're based on fact. Hough Video released the episode titled The Moon Or Bust on DVD at "Hey, Mulligan" Vol. 2.

The Moon or Bust full episode is posted online and a short clip showing the 3-D comic is available, too.

Thanks to Lawrence Kaufman for the information about the episode.
