View-Master® Reels and Packets Supplement Hardback Book

View-Master® Reels and Packets Supplement cover art

Must See 3-D AwardHarry Zur Kleinsmiede has published a hardback book supplement to his View-Master® Reels and Packets Collector's Guides Vol. 1, 2 and 3 books. The supplement book receives a 3-D Review Online Magazine "Must See 3-D™ Editor's Choice Award" and is required reading for all View-Master® collectors.

As with the first three books, this edition is lavishly illustrated with several full-color pages for each chapter and some special color inserts, too. As usual, Harry has included the rarest of the rare, uncovering more items you never knew existed in the world of View-Master® collecting. The book includes a linear history of reel lists and mail order forms with examples galore. View-Master® adversiting, displays, ads, catalogs and more help the extended collector know what gems are out there to be found.

"One of the Interesting articles found on page 430 was about a service that View-Master® offered that I never knew existed," said Van Beydler, editor of 3-D Review Online Magazine. "The View-Master® Duplicating Service offered dealers the opportunity to make copies of existing View-Master® Personal® reels. I would love to get my hands on that duplicating machine," said Beydler.

View-Master® Reels and Packets Index Softbound Book

View-Master® Reels and Packets Index cover art

Must See 3-D AwardHarry Zur Kleinsmiede is back with another addition to his massive View-Master® book series. This time in a 64-page softbound book titled View-Master® Reels and Packets Index to the Four Volumes. This addition to the library gives owners of the previous four hardback volumes a quick reference with nearly 2,000 entries.

As with all the volumes, this book includes photos and stories of View-Master® products, ads and rarities. For example, read the story about the View-Master® blister pack that was cancelled after going in production for Captain IO, the 3-D film starring Michael Jackson shown at Disney Theme Parks, and find out if any of the examples survived. Read about why some special state reels printed in green ink are so hard to find.

There are even two notes pages so you can write in anything you happen to find for your personal collection that might be something special no one else has. "As the person who produced the Branson, Missouri View-Master® reels for sale as a souvenir in the country music mecca, I could write in that I have the test reels for this production as well as some factory literature as I was coordinating the production," said Van Beydler, who photographed and funded the Branson View-Master® souvenir set back in 1995.

Additionally, Harry has included a fun View-Master® Trivia Quiz. Answers are found in the four volumes. On the back cover is a full color photo showing the historical marker at Oregon Caves N.M. The marker commemorates the place where William H. Gruber met Harold J. Graves that led to the creation of View-Master®.

You can order the book directly from Harry. The price is $14.95 plus shipping. Contact Harry at Harry@uitgeverijakasha.nl or visit the 3-D Book Productions website.

The View-Master® Reels and Packets Index to the Four Volumes receives a "Must See 3-D™ Editor's Choice Award". Do not wait to add this to your 3-D reference library. These are books are the View-Master® bibles.

Mattel Introduces View-Master® DLX Virtual Viewer 2.0 at New York Toy Show

View-Master Virtual Viewer 2.0

Mattel showed off the View-Master® DLX Viewer at the New York Toy Show and the new version sports several improvements. You can use headphones with the device rather than the sound from the phone's speakers, muted by being placed inside the viewer.

The DLX also has enhanced optical lenses but the best upgrade is the focal adjustment on the top of the viewer. This interocular adjustment will help people like my brother who could never see 3-D using the original View-Master® viewers due to his wider set eyes. It was only after I got an old 1950s Realist format viewer that he could see 3-D because of the interocular ability to widen the view. Kudos to Mattel for adding this feature!

Gog Update from the 3-D Film Archive

Gog Blu-Ray art

Herbert L. Strock's Gog will be released on 3-D Blu-ray on March 1, 2016 by Kino Lorber. The 3-D Film Archive has updated it's Web page about this 1954 science-fiction classic with loads of behind the scenes information, lobby card and poster images,

Bob Furmanek, founder of the 3-D Film Archive said, "Of all our restoration projects, GOG is the most rewarding for me personally. When I began my search for lost 3-D elements in the early 1980's, GOG was at the top of my want list. Through my archival work with Jerry Lewis, I got to know director Herbert L. Strock quite well. He was very proud of his work on this film and lamented the fact that it was lost in 3-D. After extensive research, I found the lost left side faded Pathe color 35mm release print in 2001. I tell the full story of this exciting discovery in the commentary track on the Blu-ray.

After suffering through flat, black and white, full-frame 16mm prints for decades, it's a real thrill to finally see GOG restored as the filmmakers intended - in vibrant color, widescreen and 3-D!"

The Blu-ray will feature audio commentary by film historians Tom Weaver, Bob Furmanek and David Schecter as well as trailers.

National Stereoscopic Association (NSA) Stereographic Resources Program

NSA logoThe National Stereoscopic Association (NSA) is rolling out a new, online resource for collectors and historians. After many inquiries, Tex Treadwell’s (in association with other stereo historians) resources of checklists, backlists, biographies etc. are being updated, revamped and made available again, as are new lists.

This program is being launched with an exciting and long awaited list of Michael Burr’s British comic narrative views. Many years ago, Russell Norton tracked down Burr’s original copyright registrations. Other then a few blindstamped cards, Burr is not credited on the majority of the cards. His name was completely unknown, and even denied by collectors until Russell’s research provided a credit to these prevalent genre views. This was no easy task as in the 1850s the new craft of photography did not have its own copyright category and images were entered along with all other works of art - paintings, illustrations, books, sculpture, etc.

In the early 1860s photography was added as a category under the art registration descriptions, but finding aids and modern archivists denied the existence of any photographic entries before then. Russell undertook the task of reading through all of the 1850s and 1860s entries to extract the information. In addition to his steadfast work digging out copyright records, he also acquired an incredible sample book of Burr’s images which provided further evidence of the photographer’s work. Russell has kindly shared his research as the inaugural list for NSA’s Stereographic Resources program.

The lists will mostly be in the form of spreadsheets that will be made available pre-sorted into logical categories such as photographer’s original number, title, date, etc. (These are “read only” documents. The spreadsheets/lists themselves will not be available except to those involved in their production and maintenance.) These valuable resources will be rolled out a few at a time as they are completed, so researchers should check back periodically. They are free of charge to everyone for downloading and self printing.

Paula Fleming has agreed to oversee this program. As projects like this require the help of many people, volunteers are greatly appreciated. Anyone who has an interest in “adopting” an existing list and overseeing editorial changes, rekeying old documents, or proposing, making and donating new ones should contact her at britishstereos@hotmail.com. The NSA is also open to proposals for a permanent name for this program. Your help is critical in making this exciting program a success.

Donate to 3-D Space through eBay

Eric Kurland, founder of 3-D Space, has a way for you to make donation to support 3-D preservation if you sell through eBay. eBay for Charities has teamed up with PayPal Giving Fund to give eBay sellers an easy way to support their favorite charities. You can easily designate a portion of your sale prices to go to 3-D SPACE as a fully tax-deductible donation.

Donate 10 to 100 percent of the final sale price of an item to 3-D SPACE, and in the spirit of giving, eBay rewards your generosity by offering an eBay for Charity fee credit. When you create a listing with eBay for Charity and that item sells, eBay will credit the insertion and final value fees back to you, equal to the percentage of the final sale price that you chose to donate.

PayPal Giving Fund handles all administration of the eBay for Charity program, including subjecting all nonprofits to a rigorous certification process. This ensures all benefitting nonprofits:

  • Are tax-deductible organizations (excluding private foundations) in good standing with the IRS
  • Meet the eBay Community standards against promoting hate, violence or illegal activity

Because your donation is made to PayPal Giving Fund and then distributed to 3-D SPACE, 100 percent of your donation is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Learn more about the programat the 3-D SPACE eBay for Charities page.

Please consider participating and help 3-D SPACE, The Center for Stereoscopic Photography, Art, Cinema, and Education, continue it's 3-D preservation and educational outreach programs throughout 2016.

The Mermaid 3-D

The Mermaid poster art

Mermaid art

The Mermaid 3-D was released in China on Feb. 8, 2016, and may be one of the world's most profitable films that you might never see. It broke numerous box office records such as the biggest opening day and the biggest single day gross through its seventh day of release and having the biggest opening week of all time in China. On Feb. 19 it became the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time.

Through its seven day opening week, it grossed a total of $275.1 million, breaking records for the biggest seven day gross and the biggest-opening week of all time in China, breaking Furious 7's record, and the third biggest of all time, behind Hollywood films Star Wars: The Force Awakens (US$390.8 million) and Jurassic World (US$296.2 million). As of March 5, 2016, the top 3 films of all time are all in 3-D. The film is sub-titled for it's limited U.S. release.

The Plot
The Mermaid centers on a beautiful mermaid sent to kill an environment-destroying industrialist. Playboy business tycoon Liu Xuan purchases the Green Gulf, a wildlife reserve, for a sea reclamation project, and uses sonar technology to get rid of the sea life in the area. Unknown to him, the Green Gulf is the home of merpeople, and the sonar has caused many of them to die or get sick. The few survivors live in an abandoned shipwreck in the gulf, and want to assassinate Xuan for his deeds. The merfolk send Shan, a beautiful mermaid trained to walk on her fins and hide among humans, in a plot against Xuan. On the night of Xuan's party celebrating his success, Shan, pretending to be a dancer, gives her telephone number to Xuan. Xuan, believing Shan is a prostitute, calls her number in order to make his business partner jealous. Shan goes to Xuan and tries to kill him but her attempts keep backfiring.

The Mermaid was directed by Stephen Chow, famous for Kung Fu Hustle.
