Google Jump Creates Virtual Reality 3-D

Jump rig

Imagine Google’s Street View mapping product that displays street-level views of city streets and historical sites, but in 3-D everywhere you look.

The Google Jump rig is a 360-degree virtual reality 3-D system on a round mount holding 16 GoPro video cameras. Google is currently filming sights around the world using about a dozen of these rigs. Google is also working with YouTube to allow anyone to upload videos using the system.

Google is working with GoPro to develop a version of its virtual reality recording device that anyone could buy. The Jump rig consists of 16 camera modules in a circular array. The size of the rig and the arrangement of the cameras are optimized to work with the Jump assembler.

Advanced computer vision and whole lot of computing power is used to transform 16 pieces of video into stereoscopic VR video. Jump assembles 360 videos that allow you to experience a scene in every direction. Perfect stereo ensures that near things look near, far things look far. Jump's 3-D alignment approach creates a seamless panorama, so you you won't see borders where cameras are spliced together.

You can watch a 360° video (not in 3-D) using the rig online at the Kolor Eyes site. To pan, hold down your left mouse key and move the mouse to the left or right.
