Brewster Magazine Uses Vintage Stereoviews Turned to Anaglyphs to Tell Its Stories

Brewster No. 1 cover art.

Brewster magazine is features vintage stereographs turned into anaglyhs paired with a themed issue. The first issue of Brewster magazine takes you for a turn-of-the-century wander along The Milford Track.

The issue features stereographs from Edgar Richard Williams and George Rose, taken between 1900 and 1927. These photos help illustrate an essay from 1908 by Blanche Edith Baughan, which first gave The Milford Track its title of the Finest Walk In The World.

Brewster No. 2 cover art.

The second issue of Brewster magazine travels through Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. The issue features anaglyphs from T. Enami, George Rose and other touring photographers, taken in the early 1900s. Some of the images were hand-tinted in the photographers' studios, allowing color images for the first time. These images are paired with translated poetry from as early as 675AD, Japanese folklore, and excerpts from the travel journals of sailors and scientists, such as Dr. Marie Stopes.

Brewster is available through it's website, which also sells anglyphic prints of some of the photos featured in the magazines. The standard print size is A3 (297mm x 420mm) printed on 160gsm paper. Other sizes are also available printed to order. All magazines and prints come with 3-D glasses.

Dragonfly Squadron 3-D Blu-ray

Dragonfly Squadron 3-D Blu-ray cover art.

Bob Furmanek has written a wonderful article about the history of Dragonfly Squadron, a film from the 1950s Golden Age of 3-D, which is now available on a newly released 3-D Blu-ray. "We acquired the rights in 2009 and began preservation work just in time," writes Furmanek. "The various stock shots used in the final battle scenes were deteriorating with vinegar syndrome and began to affect the surrounding footage as well."

The 3-D world premiere took place on Sept. 14, 2013 in Hollywood at the World 3-D Film Expo. "It was great to finally see it on the big screen but unfortunately, there were some problems with the presentation," wrote Furmanek. "Technical issues in the booth required the film to be shown in the aspect ratio of 1.37:1 and the Intermission card was placed in the wrong spot. Timing was inconsistent between the left/right 35mm prints and an audio glitch caused the sound to run out of sync for nearly two minutes. In addition, the opening credits were flat due to a mislabeled element when the new prints were made."

All of the theatrical projection problems have now been fixed and the film is now available in this stunning new 3-D Blu-ray release from Olive Films.

Greg Kintz, Technical Director for the 3-D Film Archive, meticulously restored this lost 3-D film in 4K from the original left/right 35mm elements. The timing between both eyes has been precisely matched; the Intermission card is in the correct place; the dynamic optical audio track has been fully restored and is in sync; the baked-in vertical alignment errors have been painstakingly corrected shot-by-shot; the opening titles are now fully three-dimensional and the film has been mastered in the correct aspect ratio of 1.66:1.

Hats off to Bob Furnamek and the crew at 3-D Film Archive for another great 3-D title saved from obscurity and available in what is probably its best incarnation since the original theatrical release more than 50 years ago.

3-D Review Online Magazine recommends you add Dragonfly Squadron to your collection. The more 3-D movies that are good sellers when they are released leads the film companies and independent producers to take on the task of releasing more of these classic titles.

Dragonfly Squadron is available for purchase online.
