World 3-D Film Expo III Returns to The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood

The World 3-D Film Expo will return to the Egyptian Theatre from Sept. 6 through 15, 2013. The 10 day festival will pay tribute to the 60th anniversary of what many
film historians regard as the “Golden Age” of 3-D, and will include screenings of the John Wayne western Hondo, the Vincent Price horror film House of Wax, Cole Porter’s musical Kiss Me Kate, and sci-fi thriller It Came from Outer Space, and even later 3-D films, such as 1983’s Jaws 3-D. Lesser-known titles, such as The French Line with Jane Russell and film noir Second Chance with Robert Mitchum, will also be included.

The Expo is partnering with digital 3-D projection sponsor RealD to present a number of screenings in RealD 3-D including Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder and Jack Arnold’s sci-fi/horror classic Creature from the Black Lagoon. Stefan Droessler, 3-D historian and head of the Munich Film Museum, will present an in-depth overview of “European 3-D Filmmaking 1935-1953,” including long-lost footage from the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

The festival will also be home to several premieres including the Los Angeles Premiere of the 1946 Russian 3-D adaptation of Robinson Crusoe. September 14 will mark the World Premiere of the stereoscopic version of the 1954 Korean War drama, Dragonfly Squadron. The film was only released in a flat version during its initial release, and has never been seen by audiences in 3-D. Newly-restored 35 mm prints of shorts Rocky Marciano, Champion vs. Jersey Joe Walcott, Challenger and College Capers will be screened in 3-D for the first time in 60 years.

Most programs being presented at the festival will be shown in archival double-system 35 mm. prints, many of them the last known copies. The World 3-D Expo has been called “a Woodstock for movie geeks” by film critic Leonard Maltin. Organized by Jeff Joseph of SabuCat Productions, the Expo was first presented at The Egyptian Theatre to sold-out crowds in 2003 and again in 2006. “The technical demands of presenting 3-D cinema and the increasing difficulty of finding prints means that for many of the films
presented, this may be the last time they are ever screened in this format” says producer and programmer Jeff Joseph.

Tickets for the festival are available on the Expo website at: www.3-dfilmexpo.com or by calling the Expo Box Office at 661-724-0934. Individual tickets are
$18 per show; an Expo Pass for all 35 programs is available at $399 including priority seating. The World 3-D Film Expo will be held at The Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Note: The World 3-D Film Expo III is not a presentation of the American Cinematheque which owns and operates The Egyptian Theatre.

For more information about the Expo, contact Jack Theakston or Dennis Bartok.

New U.S. $100 Bill Adds 3-D Security Features

A 3-D ribbon is part of the new security features for the new $100 bill.

The new $100 note is the latest denomination of U.S. currency to be redesigned. More than a decade of research and development went into its new security features including a 3-D ribbon.

New Security Features
The advanced security features are the 3-D Security Ribbon and the Bell in the Inkwell. The new security features offer a simple and subtle way to verify a new $100 note is real.

3-D Security Ribbon
Look for a blue ribbon on the front of the note. Tilt the note back and forth while focusing on the blue ribbon. You will see the bells change to 100s as they move. When you tilt the note back and forth, the bells and 100s move side to side. If you tilt it side to side, they move up and down. The ribbon is woven into the paper, not printed on it.

Bell in the Inkwell
Look for an image of a color-shifting bell, inside a copper-colored inkwell, on the front of the new $100 note. Tilt it to see the bell change from copper to green, an effect which makes the bell seem to appear and disappear within the inkwell.

Jefferson Stereoptics to Stop Offering View-Master® Auctions

John Saddy at Jefferson Stereoptics has announced he will hold one last auction to sell consigned View-Master® items. Date of the auction will be announced.

"I have enough consignments pre-arranged that I believe I will be having one more VM auction," said Saddy. "If there is anyone I promised I would sell for them or made any commitments regarding consignments, please let me know as soon as possible. I intend to remain with the stereoview consignment business which is keeping me busier than ever."

THE STEREOVIEW BOXED SET COLLECTION OF THE LATE HARRY L. NEWMAN
Harry had been a member of the National Stereoscopic Association for many years and attended most conventions as they were a source for his ever-expanding and
improving boxed set collection. "When I first knew him, he lived in New Jersey but eventually he settled in Arizona," said Saddy. "He will be missed by his many collector and dealer friends. This is widely considered to be the most comprehensive (known) boxed set stereoview collection in the world. The collection is here in London, Canada and I will be offering it over the next couple of years."

It includes comprehensive coverage by the more common makers, Keystone and U&U and also very fine coverage of less common makers such as Stereo Travel, Realistic Travels, HC White and others. Many of the sets up for auction will be what Saddy considers 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunities for stereo photography enthusiasts to
add to their collections. Some sets he was not even aware existed, even though he has been in the antique stereo imagery business for more than three decades.

Buyer's Premium Added to Stereoview Auctions
Rising costs have forced Jefferson Stereoptics to add a buyer's premium to their stereoview auctions. "I regret that I have to charged everyone who bids in my stereoview auctions a 6% buyer's premium," said Saddy. "However, we will absorb Paypal charges. The amount will be automatically added to the invoice. I have never charged a buyer's premium before, but I know how hard my wife and I work and after expenses, how little we are compensated and we feel this is entirely justified.
We thank you in advance for your understanding. Your business is very much appreciated."

Transformers: The Ride 3-D to open at Universal Orlando on June 20, 2013

The Autobots and Decepticons will soon be invading the Universal Orlando, Florida theme park. Transformers: The Ride 3-D, has been under construction for a while now, and it's finally announced its grand opening date for June 20, 2013.

Universal Orlando is the third Universal theme park to open a Transformers: The Ride 3-D attraction. Transformers: The Ride 3-D first premiered at Universal Singapore on Dec. 3, 2011, and then a second version of the ride opened at Universal Hollywood on May 25. Transformers: The Ride 3-D combines 3-D technology with Universal's robotic arm technology to bring fans into the ride's story about a group of guests who get thrown into the action during a visit to the government's NEST facility. They partner with an Autobot named Evac to fight off enemy Decepticons and protect the AllSpark. Classic Transformers pop up in the ride including Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Megatron, Sideswipe and Starscream. Industrial Light & Magic, the same team that worked on the Transformers movies, created the ride's special effects. Film director Michael Bay also collaborated on the project.

Bay is slated to direct a fourth Transformers movie for Paramount Pictures. It's scheduled to be in theatres on July 27, 2014. The movie currently stars Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Jack Raynor and Nicola Peltz.

View-Master® Advertising Collectibles

View-Master® produced many advertising items to promote selling reels, viewers, cameras and more over the years. Recently in Missouri, a man purchased a store that used to carry View-Master® products. He found several unused View-Master® advertising items stored in the attic.

View-Master® Enamel and Steel Sign

View-Master® Enamel and Steel Sign
S
teel and enamel View-Master® wall sign. This sign is 47-3/4" in diameter and is made to look like a View-Master® 3-D disc. It is multi-colored as shown with a baked-enamel white background and reads, "Take Your Vacation HOME. VIEW-MASTER 3-Dimension color pictures." There were four of these signs inside the wooden shipping crate found in the attic. Three of the signs have been sold and the owner listed the final one on eBay with a starting price of $1,495.

View-Master® Reel Counter Display

View-Master® Reel Counter Display
This 21 1/2"-diameter View-Master® counter display sign is made to look like a View-Master® reel. This sign is made of heavy (0.075" thick) cardboard with two rear fold-out feet for stability. It has a satin finish.

The seven pair of pictures around the reel show (starting at the top-and-bottom and moving clockwise) The Wizard of Oz, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Roy Rogers, Hawaiian Hula, Scenic Niagara Falls, Andersen's Fairy Tales and the Grand Canyon.

The USPS postmark label on the carton reads"Nov-7 '67 PORTLAND OREG."

GAF View-Master® Display Rack Sign

GAF View-Master® Display Rack Sign
This is a 5" x 34-3/4" GAF View-Master® display-rack sign. This sign appears to be made of a masonite-type board material. It has three
pre-drilled
mounting holes along the horizontal centerline. The white background is a flat finish, and the colors are a satin finish.

Sawyer's View-Master® Projection Display Kit

Sawyer's View-Master® Projection Display Kit (Photo 1)
The original 24-1/2" x 12-1/4" x 3-1/2" shipping carton is shown in the left in Photo 1. The label on the front of the carton says View-Master® Projection Display Kit. Inside the carton are the black spackle-finish display base board, the View-Master® sign bracket and sign, the instruction sheets, an extra "200 hour 400-W (projector) lamp" and an 8-5/8" diameter Sawyer's Rototray with 100 2"x2" original View-Master® photo slides. The Rototray carousel is shown in its storage box; the box lid is shown on the right; both box and lid are a textured brown "alligator-hide" finish. The Railway Express Agency shipping label on the outside of the carton reads "Nov. 6 - '63." The slides that came with this set had gone magenta. It is not known if the projector came with the original box as it was not with the rest of the display kit.

Sawyer's View-Master® Projection Display Kit

Sawyer's View-Master® Projection Display Kit (Photo 2)
Photo 2 shows some of the slides close-up. It is evident that there is still some color in the slides, but they have turned a considerable shade of magenta, even though this Item has been stored indoors away from direct sunlight and heat since it was new.

The 100 slides feature individual pictures of the cover jackets of many of the View-Master® reels available up to the early 1960s. A random inspection of these slides shows Woody Woodpecker, Casper, Snow White, Cinderella, Bambi, America's Man In Space, Popeye, Flintstones, London, Grand Canyon, Bugs Bunny and the Wizard of Oz, to name a few. One of the slides is shown in front of the carousel: The slide frames are 2" x 2"; the picture dimensions are 1-1/2" x 1-1/2".

The hardcover book is bound in blue cloth. The cover art of the dust jacket, painted by John Richards, depicts the Creature in his cave, carrying an unconscious woman. Creature from the Black Lagoon Aquarium Figure (1971)

Penn Plax Creature aerator. Creature aquarium back box art.

One of the rarest and most sought after Creature from the Black Lagoon merchandise pieces is the Penn-Plax figure made for aquariums. Jointed at the waist and equipped with an air tube that ran into its back, air was forced into the toy, causing him to thrash about, as if on the attack. The air then escaped as bubbles. Your fish may be a little uneasy, but rest assured, it's a beautiful piece. One of these Creature figures in it's original box recently sold at auction for over $1,600.
