Ultraman View-Master Reels (1982)

Ultraman View-Master blister pack art.

Godzilla appeared in a cartoon version on his own set of View-Master® reels but unfortunately never in 3-D images taken on the set of the famous Toho film series. The closest thing to the giant Japanese monsters to make it to a set of View-Master® reels was the Tokyo Broadcasting Company TV series Ultraman. Japanese toy manufacturer TOMY and the View-Master® International Group teamed up to sell View-Master® reels for the Japanese market.

The Ultraman series used various monster costumes, known as kaiju in Japan. The principals were played by famous stunt actor Haruo Nakajima, who operated the original Godzilla costume. His apprentice, Bin "Satoshi" Furuya, was the first actor in the Ultraman role. Nakajima had a martial arts background, but the earlier episodes used a wrestling-style fight choreography. Later episodes evolved into more complex fighting.

Often costumes of famous monsters like Godzilla and Baragon would be recycled and altered, sometimes with nothing more than spray paint and often while the actor was still inside. Nakajima quipped once that the staggering gate of some of the monsters he portrayed was due less to his acting than to the fumes he had to endure. Some of the costumes could not be shown fully as his feet would then have been exposed, a necessary allowance to maintain balance in the often cumbersome outfits. Also, the expense of repairing the scale cities and landscapes used for battle scenes required economy of movement and meticulous planning.

Editor's Note: It is not known if the adapted Godzilla costume is among the monsters featured on the Ultraman reels.

Halloween Horror Nights 3-D Maze at Universal Studios Orlando

Penn & Teller Halloween Horror Nights.

Prepare to experience the lights and allure of Las Vegas…with a toxic twist. One of Penn and Teller’s tricks has gone awry and left the city covered in nuclear ooze. Do you think you will survive a trip to “New(kd) Las Vegas?” Comedians Penn & Teller are ready to show off their scarier side this Halloween. The duo has produced a 3-D maze for Universal Orlando Resort's annual "Halloween Horror Nights" event under the theme "New(kd) Las Vegas" that features a dilapidated and radioactive version of Las Vegas, as if one of their magic tricks has gone terribly wrong and the city, its showgirls, slot machines, buffets and little white wedding chapel has been covered in nuclear ooze.

It's the first time the illusionists have worked with Universal on an attraction. The 3-D maze will only appear at the Orlando theme park, which opened Sept. 21. Because Universal Studios Hollywood had a 3-D maze planned around Alice Cooper, Horror Nights planners approached Penn & Teller to co-develop a new 3-D concept this year, said Jim Timon, senior VP of entertainment at Universal Orlando Resort.

In developing the maze, the pair wanted to incorporate the satirical humor seen in their Las Vegas show, produced at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, for the past decade, "We thought it would be funny if we would do a new act that was really spectacular using nuclear warheads and blew up Vegas and made the whole thing a nightmare," Penn Jillette said, "It's not very much of a push" from what the city is like now. Jillette will guide guests through the maze before they encounter both Penn & Teller.

"For years, people have talked to us about doing a haunted house, but we could never really come up with an idea. It always seemed like an amateurish venture unless you could have the resources that Universal has. It's an artform they've perfected," said Teller.

The Orlando park also will produce maze around AMC's  The Walking Dead, the Silent Hill videogames and Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare.

Los Angeles 3-D Club to screen two classic Desert Noir 3-D films on Oct. 28, 2012

A screening of classic and contemporary “Desert Noir 3-D” films, Inferno 3-D (1953) and Dark Country 3-D (2009), sponsored by the LA3D Club, will take place at the Downtown Independent Theatre on Sunday Oct. 28 at 7p.m.  On hand to introduce the films will be the “Czar of Noir,” Eddie Muller, founder of the Film Noir Foundation, and Thomas Jane, director and star of Dark Country 3-D.  Jane will also be doing a book signing at 5 p.m. at the theatre for his new graphic novel publication of Dark Country, with art by Thomas Ott.

Inferno 3-D is the only 1950s 3D film produced by 20th Century Fox studio.  Presented here for the first time in a brand new digital restoration by film historian Daniel Symmes, Inferno  makes striking use of 3-D in telling the tale of a treacherous wife (Rhonda Fleming) who leaves her millionaire husband (Robert Ryan) in the Mojave Desert to die.

Dark Country, released by Sony Pictures/Stage Six in 2009, is a 3-D horror/noir thriller starring Thomas Jane, Lauren German and Ron “Hellboy” Perlman. About Dark Country 3-D, Muller has written that “the movie is a delirious dream of the dark pulpy stuff we loved as kids—and always will.”   The evening of this big Desert Noir 3-D double bill will also feature a display of historic 1950s 3-D promotional materials in the lobby of the Downtown Independent Theatre and a Q&A between Muller and Jane before the screening of Dark Country 3-D.

The Downtown Independent Theatre is located at 251 South Main St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.  More infomation about this screening and other LA3D Club screenings is available online at la3dclub.com.
