Titanic 2-D to 3-D Conversion a Topic at 2012 NAB Show

Jon Landau, Academy Award® winning Producer of Titanic, and William Sherak, President of Stereo D, shared how the 2-D to 3-D conversion of Titanic was achieved at the 2012 NAB Show on Monday, April 16.

Stereo D, a subsidiary of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group Inc., was the vendor of choice for director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau after seeing early tests from Stereo D suggesting that Cameron's high hopes for the conversion could be met. Cameron collaborated closely with Stereo D's founder William Sherak to inspire the team of artists at Stereo D to sculpt the original photography into 3-dimensional images full of depth and scope.

For the filmmakers, that meant never settling for images that were good enough. The process required time, but more than that, it required inspired artistry. "It takes true artists to do this work," Sherak explains. "Every frame had to be looked at as a piece of art and it takes a creative vision to see how we're going to add depth to that frame."

Along with bringing together an experienced team of 450 artists, the 2-D to 3-D conversion technology developed by Stereo D made it possible to meet the demanding 60-week schedule for the re-release of Titanic in 3-D on April 4.

Rob Legato, Academy Award® winner for best visual effects on Hugo and Titanic, moderated Monday's session, Titanic to 3-D: 279,360 Frames, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., in the Convention Center South Hall.

The NAB Show is the world's largest electronic media show covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content across all mediums.

Who will pay for the Men in Black 3-D Glasses?

Men in Black 3-D

Sony Pictures and major cinema operators are locked in a standoff over who will pay for 3-D glasses for Men in Black 3.

Sony Corp.'s film unit and theatre executives are trying to resolve the dispute over 3-D showings of the movie, scheduled to open on May 25. Executives from Regal Entertainment Group, the largest chain, and Cinemark Holdings Inc., the third biggest, have said they won't give in.

"Nothing has changed," said John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Sony said it would stop paying for glasses, starting with Men in Black back in September. Major cinemas agreed to pay a 50-cent per ticket fee to RealD Inc., their technology supplier, while studios would foot the 40-cent tab for glasses when 3-D started it recent resurgeance. Sony wants theatres to pay both costs.

Men in Black 3 is a revival of the science-fiction comedy series starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as special agents charged with managing Earth's secret alien population. The Amazing Spider-Man, is another big Sony 3-D release scheduled to hit theatres on July 3.

Bearing the cost of glasses would erode the added profit cinema chains get from the higher prices charged for 3-D showings.

Three years ago, News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox relented and paid for glasses. Fox attempted to pass the cost of glasses with the release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs before backing down as the release date neared.

In most U.S. cinemas, glasses are provided by RealD, the leading maker of 3-D projection equipment. Studios and cinemas split the premium charged for 3-D screenings, which averages about $3 a ticket.

View-Master Pony Express movie preview reel test reel.

A View-Master® movie preview reel test reel with handwriting on it that reads Pony Express sold for $676.60 with seven bids. However, according to the buyer, the reel is actually the test reel for the movie The Nebraskan. During the sale, the reel promoted it as being from the 1953 film Pony Express starring Charleton Heston as Buffalo Bill and Forrest Tucker as Wild Bill Hickok in which Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickok join forces to establish a mail route that can get mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, in 10 days. Had it been from Pony Express, it would have been a previously unknown movie preview reel title. Which would have been almost as good as finding the announced but never produced Creature from the Black Lagoon movie preview reel. The buyer is returning the reel to the seller.
