Joel Fletcher's 3-D Images from the set of The Nightmare Before Christmas

3-D image from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Used by Permission. Courtesy of Joel Fletcher. (c) Disney

Joel Fletcher is an artist and animator with quite an impressive resume. Career highlights include being a Principal Animator for The Nightmare Before Christmas and Supervising CG Animator for Disney’s Dinosaur.

Fletcher has 14 years experience as a Lead CG Animator using Maya and Softimage for films, commercials and video games. He has filmed stop-motion animation and visual effects for nationally known products including Hersheys, Listerine, Pillsbury and even Smokey Bear. Fletcher is an expert in 3-D stereo photography and is accomplished in the traditional arts of painting, drawing, sculpture and cinematography. He is also proficient with Adobe® Photoshop® and Final Cut Pro® software. Fletcher and Prudence Fenton were co-nominated for a primetime Emmy® for Outstanding Achievement in Graphic Design and Title Sequences for 1998's Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special.

Being a principal animator for The Nightmare Before Christmas gave Fletcher a unique opportunity for creating a series of 3-D images of scenes created for the film. "I was an animator at Skellington Productions for The Nightmare Before Christmas in the early nineties," said Fletcher. "Whenever possible, I took the initiative to photograph the amazing setups in 3-D. I photographed them with my Nikon stereo rig on Kodachrome slide film."

"The stereo pairs were digitally scanned and converted to anaglyph format for presentation on my webpage. They are a testament to the outstanding artistry of the crew of Skellington Productions," said Fletcher. The anaglyphic photos require either red/blue or red/cyan 3-D glasses to see the stereoscopic effect. The red lens goes over the left eye.

Fletcher grew up in Wisconsin, but moved to Los Angeles to get into the animation and special effects business in 1985. That was the same time he started his stereo photography, "To document all the cool projects I was working on," says Fletcher.

There are so many great artists that inspired Fletcher over the years, however the formative teenage period was when the spark began. "Back then, I would have to say artists like Frank Frazetta, Steve Ditko and Richard Corben influenced my drawing and painting," said Fletcher. "My animation interest came from the films of Ray Harryhausen, early Disney, as well as the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials. As for 3-D photography, that all came from View-Masters®, especially the reels that had all the great diorama model work. Originally I thought I would be a painter, but I found I had a knack for filmmaking and stop-motion animation. I view stop-motion as an 'ultimate art form' as it combines sculpture, painting, model making, storytelling, photography, lighting, character acting and sometimes even dance and music. I made a lot of short films as a starving artist, and that experience led to going pro when I moved to Los Angeles."

Humans Are Among Us Sci-Fi Channel Poster (2009)

In 2009, the Sci Fi Channel, a division of NBC Universal Global Networks, presented an advertising campaign in which the tables were turned. What if our viewing of zombies, aliens and the other strange creatures like the Gill Man is an invasion of their space? They’d be screaming, with horror, "Humans are among us!" The first ad is a spoof of film posters for the 1954 movie, Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The campaign was developed at Saatchi & Saatchi Milan, Italy, by creative director Agostino Toscana, art director Luca Pannese, copywriter Luca Lorenzini and illustrator Mike Koelsch.

Creature from the Black Lagoon The Musical (2009-2010 Universal Studios Tour)

Abbott and Costello Meet The Creature from the Black Lagoon

It's Feb. 21, 1954 and Bud Abbott and Lou Costello performed a skit to introduce Universal's newest monster before a live audience during The Colgate Comedy Hour on TV. The skit runs 14:13 with the Creature (Ben Chapman) showing up only in the last few seconds...most likely for shock value. Glenn Strange also appears as The Frankenstein Monster. Rumor is that Universal International was going to pair up Bud and Lou with the Gill Man but the movie project was scrapped when the studio suddenly fired the comedy team before the feature was filmed.
