| NBC-TV
and TV Guide Go 3-D with Critically Acclaimed Drama Series
Medium
Special 3-D episode premieres on NBC Monday, Nov.
21, TV Guide to be exclusive magazine distributor of 3-D glasses
in November 21 collectible Medium cover on newsstands
Nov. 17
NBC,
in partnership with TV Guide magazine and Paramount
Network Television, will distribute 3-D glasses for an enhanced
look at a special 3-D episode of the hit drama Medium
airing on November 21. In the November 21 issue, on newsstands
November 17, TV Guide will feature a Medium
cover and offer readers a chance to view the episode in 3-D
with special glasses included inside the magazine. Medium
stars Patricia Arquette, who received an Emmy Award for Outstanding
Lead Actress in a Drama Series, for her portrayal of Allison
DuBois on the series.
Series creator Glenn Gordon Caron, who came up with the idea,
says, "The whole show won't be in 3-D but there will
be 3-D segments throughout." During the episode, ghosts
will appear in viewers living rooms.
The announcement was made by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC
Entertainment and Ian Birch, Editor-in-Chief at TV Guide.
"The Medium 3-D episode provides a great way
for fans to enjoy a heightened perspective of Allison's intriguing
visions," said Reilly. "We're thrilled to partner
with TV Guide on this exciting event and thank Glenn
Gordon Caron for developing the idea"
"At TV Guide, we're big fans of Medium
and we're very excited to be involved in this special episode,"
said Ian Birch, the editor-in-chief of TV Guide magazine.
"By serving as the exclusive provider of the 3-D glasses
that will enable viewers to fully experience this program,
we're fulfilling our goal to enhance the television viewing
experience of all TV Guide readers."
"I first began exploring the possibility of doing a
3-D episode of television over a decade ago when I was working
on Moonlighting' said Medium executive producer
Glenn Gordon Caron. "When Medium became successful,
I realized that in many ways it was an even better vehicle
for 3-D."
"Additionally, technology seems to have finally caught
up with me. Directors Jim Cameron, Robert Rodriguez and a
host of other innovators have pushed the medium (you'll pardon
the pun) into the 21st century, and our show and our viewers
will be the beneficiaries of that. I think people will be
surprised by how vivid and dynamic 3-D has become."
In the 3-D episode, which will be telecast Monday, Nov. 21
(10-11 p.m. ET), Allison (Patricia Arquette) comes to realize
that there is an added dimension to the way she experiences
art. It seems the act of creation is so intense that artists
often leave an element of themselves behind in their work,
an element that is evident only to Allison. Ever wonder why
the Mona Lisa is smiling? Or what's bothering the subject
of "The Scream"? When Allison encounters the work
of one artist, disturbing, 3-dimensional images emerge that
lead her to believe that the man behind these alarming canvasses
may have a deadly secret.
TV Guide will be distributing glasses through subscribers,
newsstand copies and 500,000 subscription renewal mailings.
Both NBC and TV Guide will coordinate guerrilla marketing
campaigns to distribute glasses to consumers on the street,
in addition to the glasses that will be included inside the
November TV Guide issue. At some point, viewers can
also go to the NBC and TV Guide Web sites to learn
how to get 3-D glasses in their areas.
Medium, which premiered last January, comes from
award-winning executive producer, creator and director Glenn
Gordon Caron. The chilling drama is inspired by the real-life
story of research medium Allison DuBois. Emmy winner Arquette
(Stigmata, Flirting with Disaster) stars as a young
wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling
to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people. Arquette
received the Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama
Series category after the telecast of the initial 16 episodes
of the critically acclaimed series.
Jake Weber, Miguel Sandoval, David Cubitt, Sofia Vassilieva
and Maria Lark also star.
Caron is creator and executive producer. Kelsey Grammer (Girlfriends),
Steve Stark and Oscar winner Ronald L. Schwary (Ordinary
People) are executive producers. Medium is produced
by Picturemaker Productions, Inc. in association with Grammnet
Productions and Paramount Network Television.
In-Three Inc.
receives a positive court order as IMAX fails to secure an
early trial date in patent dispute
On
Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, the Honorable Judge Florence-Marie
Cooper of the United States District Court for the Central
District of California rejected IMAX Corporation’s request
for an early trial date in the ongoing patent litigation between
IMAX and In-Three.
This Order comes on the heels of several other recent setbacks
in IMAX’s bid to shut In-Three down. On Aug. 1, 2005,
in a lengthy and detailed order, Judge Cooper denied IMAX’s
motion for preliminary injunction, finding that IMAX was unlikely
to prevail on its patent infringement claims against In-Three.
In addition, on Aug. 10, 2005, the United States Patent and
Trademark Office granted In-Three’s request to reexamine
the validity of the ’294 patent, which IMAX acquired
from a third-party just days prior to initiating this lawsuit.
The Patent Office determined that substantial new questions
of patentability exist for all claims of the ’294 patent.
Having had its Motion for Preliminary Injunction denied and
facing a decision by the Patent Office potentially invalidating
the ’294 patent, IMAX pushed for a trial date early
in 2006. IMAX’s request was denied and the court set
a trial date for Nov. 28, 2006.
“We are extremely gratified that the court rejected
IMAX’s attempt to rush this case to trial before In-Three
has had a chance to take adequate discovery on its counterclaims
against IMAX,” said Michael Kaye, President and CEO
of In-Three.
In-Three is the developer of the first high-quality process
for converting full-length motion pictures into 3-D. In-Three’s
Dimensionalization® process was introduced by a group
of film-making legends, including George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis,
James Cameron and Randal Kleiser at the ShoWest exhibitor
trade show in Las Vegas in March 2005.
VH1's I Love the
80s 3-D Glasses
VH1
is showcasing I Love the 80s: 3-D and viewers can
pick up their free 3-D eyeglasses at Best Buy stores across
America.
Rock stars and celebrities from that decade will come together
once more to wax poetic about the essential 1980s experience,
and this time it will be a vision altering event.
From Jheri-curls to Rat-tails, Oak Ridge Boys to Fine Young
Cannibals, Star Search to Spenser for Hire, Cannonball Run
to Naked Gun, the offbeat nostalgia show will bring viewers
a skewed view of the music, movies, TV shows, fashions, fads
and trends that defined pop culture during every year of that
decade.
Each one-hour episode of I Love The 80s: 3-D offers
an adventure through a single year, celebrating the good,
the bad and the greedy through retro clips from sitcoms, movies,
music videos, TV commercials, network news and other sources,
plus more than 200 new interviews with the people who survived
the decade that created 'the fruit roll-up'.
To promote the series, VH1 employed red-hoodie-wearing bike
riders carrying ET: The Extra-terrestrial dolls in Times Square,
Penn Station and other New York City locales while “’80s
ambassadors” walked alongside them, attempting to distribute
15,000 pairs of 3-D glasses to New Yorkers. ET was released
in theatres in 1982.
VH1 is joining the list of media outlets that have not given
up on ’80s teen queen Tiffany and her efforts to resuscitate
her singing career. Tiffany, who made a name for herself crooning
hits including I Think We’re Alone Now in shopping
malls across the country before posing nude in Playboy
in 2002 and cooperating with E! on a True Hollywood Story,
headlined a live acoustic show in Los Angeles on Oct. 20.
It promotee VH1’s I Love the ’80s: 3-D.
Tiffany, the 80's teen queen, performed at National Amusements
Theaters’ The Bridge: Cinema de Lux, followed by a trivia
contest, which might be kind of redundant, and panel discussion
with the TV show’s commentators. The singer’s
performance was also available on the VH1’s Web site.

Award Winning Monster
Mania Convention Program features The Creature from the Black

a 2004 Rondo Award. Dave Hagan's first ever convention, Monster
Mania 2003, was held at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center

The artwork is by Vincent Di Fate. Di Fate has held an international
reputation as one of the world's leading artistic visionaries
of the future. People Magazine has said that he is "One
of the top illustrators of science fiction, Di Fate is not
all hard-edge and airbrush slickness. His works are always
paintings, a bit of his brushwork shows, and they are all
the better because of it." Omni Magazine has made the
observation that "Moody and powerful, the paintings of
Vincent Di Fate depict mechanical marvels and far frontiers
of a future technocracy built on complicated machinery and
human resourcefulness. Di Fate is something of a grand old
man in the highly specialized field of technological space
art. Stirring images of far-flung environments have been his
trademark." In his prolific career, he has produced art
of science fiction, astronomical and aerospace subjects for
such clients as IBM, The Reader's Digest, The National
Geographic Society, and the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration.

Creature
from the Black Lagoon Trading Cards Part 2
You'll Die Laughing (1973)
The
Creature from the Black Lagoon was featured on one of the
comedic trading cards from the 1973 You'll Die Laughing
trading card set published by Topps.
The set, which takes it's name from the headline on the card
backs, has always been a popular trading card set owing to
it's large monster content, ease of set completion and relatively
low cost.
Paper stock is rather weak which affects corner and edge
wear. Also, blurry images are a severe problem with 1973 You'll
Die Laughing cards.
Topps also produced a You'll Die Laughing set in 1980. This
set is better known as Creature Feature.
There are 128 cards in the set. A near-mint set is valued
between $150 and $200.
Frankenstein Valentine Stickers (1966)

In 1966, Topps Trading Cards issued a special sticker set
featuring classic and generic monsters in a Valentine themed
set. A cartoon version of The Creature from the Black Lagoon
with the hilarious caption, "We'd Make a Splash Together"
is in the 44 sticker set. A complete set is valued between
$700 and $850.

House of Wax
Trading Cards Part 2
Published by Rosan in 1965, Monster Cards features a House
of Wax image on trading card number 39 in the set. This is
an example of a card set that was crudely produced, but has
been embraced by card collectors for this very same reason.
Monster Cards suffer from many off-centering and printing
errors, especially cards #1-10, and many cards are found with
slight miscuts.

The Famous
Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos to be published in Collector's
Book
 The
Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos is a celebration
of the career of the acknowledged master of film monster portrait
art. To many fans of classic horror movies, the name Basil
Gogos is as familiar as that of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi
or Vincent Price. Gogos' paintings are as iconic as his subjects.
This long-overdue retrospective features high-quality reproductions
of many of his most famous paintings as well as many previously
unpublished paintings and drawings of classic film creatures
and actors.
Gogos' early work in men's adventure magazine and paperback
book art will also be examined as well as his works in movie
posters and other areas. An in-depth career-spanning interview
with the artist will accompany the illustrations and tributes
by other artists and film professionals inspired by Gogos'
powerful images. The book will feature an introduction by
rock star, movie director and horror collector Rob Zombie.
The "monster craze" among baby-boomers, sparked
by the release of Universal Studios' horror classics to television
in the late '50s, gave birth to a new phenomenon, the monster
magazine. Famous Monsters of Filmland, filled with
monster photos and articles on horror movies and their stars,
was the premier publication for young horror film fans.
Issues of the new magazine practically leapt off the newsstand
shelves and into kids' hands due in no small way to their
striking cover paintings by Basil Gogos. Like a Bizarro world
Norman Rockwell, his stylish portraits of horror film characters
and stars were seen on magazine covers throughout the '60s
and '70s. Gogos' interpretations of movie monsters like Frankenstein,
The Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Phantom of the
Opera, breathed new life into the old black and white images.
His amazing use of color and bold, impressionistic brushwork
gave a sense of both excitement and sophistication to his
paintings which has never been matched.
Gogos' legend as the world's greatest movie monster artist
has only grown over the years. His original Famous Monsters
cover paintings are highly sought-after and are in the
collections of many filmmakers and rock stars on whom he made
a lasting impression. In recent years he has been in much
demand by producers wishing to capture the unforgettable look
and feel of the classic monster art of the '60s. CD and DVD
covers, movie posters, trading cards, book covers and new
monster magazines continue to keep Basil Gogos the world's
greatest monster artist.

Magic Action Trading Cards (1963)
In 1963, Abbey Vending issued Monster Magic Action Cards.
Monster Magic Action cards are 3-D and feature generic monsters.
There are 24 cards in the set. Cards are routinely found
in complete set form with accompanying viewer lens.
The cards were sold on a blister card instead of in wax packs.
When using the Magic Action viewer, the cards would come
to life showing a flying monster's wings flapping or the tail
of a giant lizard whipping up and down or people fleeing.

Code
3 Collectibles - Legendary Casts bring to life the artwork
from your all-time favorite movie posters in stunning three
dimensional depth reality. One of the premiere posters featured
is the 1954 classic, The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Code 3's talented artisans have captured all of the original
detail in hand painted cold cast resin. The sculptures are
fraught with exact elements from the actual movie poster.
Each cast is showcased within an artistic frame-like edge.
Each Legendary Cast is first meticulously hand sculpted in
wax. At this stage, their sculptor translates the movie poster
artwork into a three dimensional reality. Next, the approved
wax sample is copied into a mold master that is made from
a harder plastic material. This master is used to create a
resin mold. Each piece is carefully cold resin hand casted
from the mold and hand painted to match the movie poster artwork.
At each step, the studio is included for input in the details
and approval to ensure an accurate and authentically licensed
product.
About The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Celebrate over 50 years of the classic film The Creature
of the Black Lagoon with this three-dimensional sculpted

in tact. Every detail of the amazon like Creature has been
captured as he carries away Kay (Julia Adams) into the Black
Lagoon. This Legendary Cast is based on the 1954 Style A one-sheet
art work. Welcome the Creature into your home and scare friends
and family all year long. You can hang the 3-D poster art
on the wall or use the built in stand to display it on a table
top.
The sculpture measures 8.5" x 11"
and was released in January 2005. Limited to 5,001 pieces.
Other posters converted to 3-D sculptures from Code 3 include
Frankenstein, The Mummy, Van Helsing, Army of Darkness, Animal

Friday
the 13th Part 3 in 3-D Anaglyphic DVD

We don't know if this is a legal release of the film or a
pirated version of the movie...but here's what the disk label
artwork looks like for a Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3-D
DVD being sold on the Web from outside the U.S. The label
artwork seems "home-made" since it does not contain
any information about the film being copyrighted by Paramount
Pictures and the sides of the artwork are obviously mirrored
to fill the label. The Region 1 playable DVD features the
anaglyphic 3-D version of the film. We recommend purchasing
only licensed products and to beware of possible pirated products
or home-made copies. If anyone knows of this to be a legitimate
DVD release, please contact 3-D

Magnificent
Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3-D opens Sept. 23
Presented
and narrated by Tom Hanks, Magnificent Desolation: Walking
on the Moon 3-D launched in 85 IMAX theatres worldwide
on Sept. 23, with additional locations confirmed for later
dates. This film marks the widest initial release of an IMAX®
film ever, and a continuation of the IMAX space film legacy.
Previous IMAX space films have achieved great success, including
Space Station 3-D, which has generated almost $90
million in worldwide box office sales since its 2002 release.
Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3-D,
a Playtone/IMAX production sponsored by Lockheed Martin, takes
audiences to the lunar surface to walk alongside the 12 extraordinary
astronauts who have been there to experience what they saw,
heard, felt, thought and did. The astronauts' words are brought
to life by an array of some of Hollywood's most recognizable
and sought-after motion picture and television actors, including
Morgan Freeman, John Travolta, Paul Newman, Matt Damon, Matthew
McConaughey and more. The film features rarely seen NASA footage,
CGI imaging and live-action renditions of the lunar landscape
to propel audiences nearly a quarter-million miles above the
Earth's surface. These various elements, combined with IMAX®
3-D technology, crystal clear images and state-of-the-art
digital surround sound, provide a completely immersive cinematic
experience.
"The winning combination of Tom Hanks, Playtone, an
all-star voice cast and IMAX 3-D's unique ability to transport
people to places they could only dream of going, has resulted
in an amazing film.

Planar 3-D Monitor
uses Polarized Glasses
Three-dimensional
monitors may sound like toys of the future, but they're also
life-saving tools today. "With the tsunami, they used
this 3-D technology to find a safe place to land aircraft
loaded with food and supplies," says Scott Robinson,
Research Scientist at monitor maker Planar.
Planar's SD1710 17-inch LCD monitor replaces clunky CRT-based
3-D setups.
The SD1710 consists of two LCDs at a 110-degree angle and
a semitransparent mirror set between them. Wearing special
glasses with polarized lenses, a person can view 3-D images
at the panels' full 1,280 x 1,024 resolution.
The included glasses, which Robinson likens to sunglasses,
enable the viewer to move about normally, instead of staying
rooted to a sweet spot. In fact, if everyone had the glasses,
a few people could look at the same monitor at the same time.
This is a big departure from the sweet-spot nature of a previously
reviewed 3-D LCD, Sharp's 15-inch LL-151-3D.
Planar designed the SD1710 for geoscientists and cartographers,
says Robinson, but the company hopes this 3-D monitor and
its StereoMirror technology could open new vistas in medical
imaging, architecture and molecular modeling. Gaming is on
the list, too, although that seems like a long shot at the
current price of $3,995 for an SD1710. If the monitor takes
off, prices may drop to more approachable levels, says Robinson.

Center of Art and Photography presents Quiet Depths and Art
in Depth Sept. 29 through Nov. 6

Quiet Depths by Gene Faulkner
Gene Faulkner is a graduate from Southern Illinois University
at Carbondale where he received a Bachelor of Science in Photography.
He is currently a Fine Art and Commercial photographer living
and working in Portland . He has been showing his work in
Portland and around the country since 1990.
Faulkner's stereoscopic images of vignetted
environments take the viewer into the third dimension. This
unique series of diptychs and triptychs, referred to as anaglyphs,
provides a captivating view of seemingly normal scenes. Donning
the red and cyan glasses, the viewer enters a world which
is fuller and strangely more meaningful that the subject itself.
Faulkner says of his work, “I enjoy approaching my subjects
with an awkward strangeness, and hopefully creating thought
and imagination within the viewer.”
Art in Depth by Jim Long
This slide show presents the Masters as you have never seen
them before. Jim Long has painstakingly rendered the beautiful
classics of art into three dimensions in this exciting slide
show. After several years in stereo photography, Long became
intrigued by the technique of converting two dimensional art
to 3-D. Lots of practice and no small amount of talent has
resulted in a treat for all who love classic paintings.
From a career managing and developing computers and software
for one of the world's largest cheese manufacturers in Corona
, California, Long has stretched his time and his involvement
in 3--D imagery to produce hundreds of conversions. Of his
hobby, Long says, “This art form is more like sculpture
than photography for I chip away a little at a time until
the underlying stereo image is revealed.”
The 3-D Center of Art and Photography is located at 1928
NW Lovejoy in Portland, Oregon. Hours: Thursday through Sunday,
1 to 5 p.m. First Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m.

Barbie and the
Magic of Pegasus 3-D DVD
 In
her first 3-D movie, Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus,
Barbie® stars as lovely ice-skating Princess Annika™.
When she and her polar bear cub friend, Shiver™, have
to break a wizard’s evil spell, they get magical help
from a magnificent flying horse name Brietta!
The evil Wenlock has turned everyone in the kingdom to stone
and Barbie® as Princess Annika™ and Brietta, her
magnificent flying horse, are on an enchanting quest to break
the wizard’s spell.
The DVD comes with four pairs of 3-D glasses.
Barbie.com created special online games in 3-D to promote
the release of Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. The
flying game in which Barbie and her flying horse are flying
over a "rollercoaster-like" rainbow is very well
done. Watching the game in 3-D gives you the sensation of
flying through the atmosphere as clouds race by and the rolling
rainbow moves up and down as you follow along to catch a star.
To win the rainbow flying game you must catch 10 stars to
advance to the next game. The games are all fairly basic stuff
for an online game but a cute and fun game for the Barbie
set and a neat use of 3-D for 3-D fans. You can play the games
by visiting Barbie.com.
Remember to have red-blue anaglyphic glasses handy to see
the games in 3-D. You can also choose to play them in 2-D.

A
two-foot tall VariVue lenticular of Richard Hamilton sold
for $499.95 with one bid. From a private collection, this
is a fascinating, rare and very large 18" across by
24 " high 3-D VariVue lenticular 3-D picture by British-born
Pop artist Richard Hamilton from 1974.
Richard Hamilton, born in 1922, is credited with single-handedly
launching the British school of Pop Art.
The New York Metropolitan Art Museum described this image..."In
this optically complex print, Hamilton recreates the illusion
of someone (in this case, the artist) touching the surface
of a mirror, and then simultaneously seeing the back of
his own hand and the frontal reflection of his face and
body. The lifesize proportions of the figure add to the
scene's veracity. The piece is symbolically titled Palindrome,
a word whose Greek derivatives mean "fast (palin) return
(dromos)," or rebound, and applies both to words with
alphabetic symmetry (e.g., "eye"), and photons
bouncing off a reflective surface. Created especially for
a group portfolio, Mirrors of the Mind published
by Marian Goodman and Multiples Inc. (New York), the project
gave the artist the impetus to try a new technology, lenticular
laminated three-dimensional printing."
Apparently, only 100 of these 3-D images were made; however,
these same 100 were also numbered and signed. This picture
auctioned is not numbered and signed. The seller was believed
that this picture may be a rejected Artist's Proof, as it
is not marked "A/P" either. It is interesting
to note, that a signed version of this picture, in damaged
condition, went for $1,554.00 in Christie's Auction in 2003,
and there is currently being sold in a New York City art
gallery a signed edition of this print for $15,000.
