French Mystery Sling

Sold to me as a French Mas sling for about $7.00. It is not. It's too skinny. Full length buckle to tip is 52 inches. Width is 15/16th inches. No markings. Color and type of leather is identical to my Mas 49 sling (My Mas 49 sling is the same as you have pictured on a Mas 36/51). I do believe it is a French sling but have no idea what it fits.

Following WWII the French continued M98 production in the French zone of occupation in Germany.  They modified rear buttstock by cutting a deep groove and mounting a steel rod over it, fastened at either end by a screw.  Much like a bridge over a river.  The above sling, which certainly seems to fit the typical French pattern, may have been reeved through the lower barrel band, folded back onto itself, run through the buckle, and finally the narrow end fastened and pinned around the steel rod "bridge" attached above the milled sling groove in the rear left buttstock.  Would certainly have been an economical answer to existing sling pattern and newly acquired M98s.  Good luck, Bill Umphrey   PS - do not believe this to be a Yugo economy copy of German K98 side mounted sling.  No keeper, phospated sling button, different buckle, etc.

I believe it is for the MAS-45 .22 training rifle. I have two of them, one new in pack and one on my MAS-45.

I have a MAS Mod 45 in 5.5/22cal long rifle that came with that same sling. I got it in the late 70s
