The Webster Groves Lions Club recently awarded their annual Warren E. Gerlach/Webster Lions college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to five current high school graduates living in the Webster Groves area, according to Lion Jim Matthews, president of the Webster Lions. The recipients of the 97-'98 Gerlach/Webster Lions scholarships are Robert William Haydon, Joseph Joon Hwan Kim, Kelly Elizabeth Pepple, Stephen Paul Michael Rodes III and David Martin Schroeder.The Webster Lions college scholarships have been presented annually since 1964. The program was originally developed and supervised by Warren E. Gerlach, a life-long resident of the Webster Groves area and a long-time member of the Webster Groves Lions Club. The purpose of the Webster Lions scholarship program is to assist a deserving student to pursue a career through higher education. The Gerlach/Webster Lions college |
scholarships are available to any high school senior who resides within the boundaries of the Webster Groves School District. The scholarship awards may be applied to higher education after a student has been evaluated and approved by the Gerlach/Webster Lions scholarship committee. This year's committee was chaired by Webster Lion Phil Hunt who has served in this capacity since 1992.During the past 33 years, the Webster Groves Lions Club has provided in excess of $90,000 in college scholarship funds to high school graduates of the community. The Webster Lions were chartered in 1925 and have contributed more than $1 million to a variety of worthwhile needs and charitable programs. The organization derives most of its revenue from local fund-raising projects such as an annual Lions Club Carnival & Barbecue held in conjunction with the Webster Groves Community Days celebration during the July 4th holiday.
