Build Pride in Membership

The decisions made and programs developed by our predecessors have made us the world's largest service organization. It is now our responsibility to maintain and further expand our leadership position. To motivate our members and clubs, I have established the 1997-98 Five-Star Club Program, which, when achieved, will result in the club being awarded a very special recognition. However, securing this for your club will require the cooperation of every member. As international president, I intend to do my share to support my home club. Whether you are a club member, club president, a district governor or a past international director, I urge you to help your club complete these stars:

  • Produce at least a 10 percent net membership increase, based on the increase shown on your club's Membership & Activities reports through June 30, 1998 as compared to the total on June 30, 1997. Reports must be received at International Headquarters by the closing date in July, 1998.

  • Formally induct every new member, using the official Lions Clubs International induction ceremony. Present each of them with a New Member Kit and lapel pin, and immediately assign them to an active club committee.

  • Organize at least three, one-hour orientation sessions for new members, led by one of the club's most knowledgeable Lions. If you don't already have an established program, I urge you to contact the Membership Operations Department at International Headquarters and ask for a copy of the Orientation Guide (ME-13).

  • Maintain a "zero drop" policy during 1997-98. This means not losing a single member from your roster during the year, except through transfer to another Lions Club or death.

  • Place at least five articles about your club's activities in local newspapers, not including regular meeting notices. Copies of the articles must be attached to the application form which all clubs will receive during the year.

If you earn all five stars, you will receive a distinctive patch for your banner. But it will mean much more than that to your club. For you will end the year with more members -- members who are more knowledgeable, more active and filled with pride about our history and accomplishments. Your club will also be better known in the community. We are already the best known service club organization in the world. But I want your club to be the best known service club in your community.
