A MESSAGE TO MISSOURI LIONS

It's May 21st on a flight back from California where I represented our International Association at a District Convention.

The areas of concern in this district are no different from some in our Multiple 26. Membership in the district is below 1250 and it will become transitional July 1, 1997. This district and an adjoining district have agreed to merge. The Lioness in the district have indicated they would be interested in forming their own club. This club could add approximately 200 members to the district. If this had been done one or two years ago there would have been no need for redistricting.

The District Governor Elect has a plan with specific areas targeted for membership. This plan utilizes the past district governors in the district to help organize and increase membership. This is in coordination with the membership and extension chairman. This plan could also include past international directors. If this had been done one or two years ago, redistricting might not be an issue. Is this descriptive of districts in Multiple 26?

There are two basic reasons we stay as Lions members. First, we have to feel we belong in the club. We have to feel wanted. We must be included in meetings and projects. Secondly, we have to feel like we are doing something important for the people of our community and also to be able to contribute to the world through our own service organization. These two feelings are driven by leadership, from the club president to the district, multiple and international level. Leadership is the key.

Education is the greatest tool for leadership, both to develop and to perform. We have the programs in each district. President's let's use them. District leaders, even if not specifically asked for, offer to take the training to the individual clubs.

We have to be inclusive and we have to feel like we belong. We have to be knowledgeable about Lions if we want to feel our time and work is important. These ideas, while not a total answer to membership, are something to think about.

We will talk some more later.

Lion Dr. Dwayne Garrett, International Director
