Clayton Lions Club Offers Good Times, Good Works

The Clayton Lions Club, chartered June 3, 1931, recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Lions Bob Wahlstrom, club treasurer, and Peter Frantzen, club secretary, took that opportunity to explain to Citizen Journal staff writer Kevin Carbery what the Clayton Lions Club and Lionism is all about.

They explained that the principle mission of Lions Clubs International, since the appearance of Helen Keller at the International Convention in 1925, is to work with the blind and visually impaired. They also indicated that there are other areas of interest and involvement in addition to working with the blind and visually impaired.

Mr Carbery was told of the club and district involvement with the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation and one of its fundraisers the Missouri Lions All-Star Football Game played in July. Lion Wahlstrom is the local chairman for the football game. Mr. Carbery was also told of the involvement in presenting a computer to the University of Missouri-St. Louis for the use of the blind.

The use of an LCIF grant matched with District and Club contributions resulted in a donation of approximately $44,000 to Childrens Hospital for equipment to detect amblyopia (lazy eye). The clubs annual involvement in Suburban Journals Old Newsboys Day fund-raising event for local charities was also pointed out.

Lion Frantzen explained the need for many fund raising events and how club members are frequently seen selling funnel cakes around the area to fund their many charity projects. "At Strassenfest, we made $7,000 alone on funnel cakes," Frantzen said. "What we make goes back to the community."

Lion Frentzen, a 54 year old insurance man from Bel-Nor and 10 yr Lion, and Lion Wahlstrom, a 67 year old stockbroker from Clayton and 25 yr Lion, both said they consider the effort they have put into the Lions Club as time well spent. They both also said that the 12 member Club is actively seeking new members and such membership would be a worthwhile and gratifying experience for young men and women seeking involvement in their community.
