MLERF Board Approves Funding For Research

At their September Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved funding $40,000 to begin Glaucoma Research at the Foundation.

This research project will be conducted by Dr. Jim Robinson, from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Dr. Ron Walkenbach, Executive Director of the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation (MLERF), along with a research technician. Together, they will develop a tribecular meshwork cell culture laboratory to study glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness.

"We already have all of the equipment needed to do this work," explained Dr. Walkenbach, "and our facilities are equipped for this type of research." Dr. Robinson will use the data accumulated during the initial research stages to write a grant to the National Institute of Health, seeking further funding for this glaucoma research project in future years.
