LION NEWS FROM OLD MONROE

This year, our visitors included past International Director Lion Wayne Henderson and his wife Becky, District Governor Don Noland and his wife Betty, and Zone Chairman Lion Marvin Himmel. International Director Candidate Dr. Dwayne Garrett, District Cabinet Treasurer Lion Dale Burwinkle (pictured right) and his wife Cindy (pictured center), and 1996-97 Zone Chairwoman Lioness Altha Marsh were also our guests during the year. We look forward to a dinner meeting with Governor Lion Jim Salarano and his wife, Marine, this coming November 19.

Our club is proud to announce that we gained seven new fine looking members this year. We all realize how important new members are to our club and District. This is an increase of about a third in our club's membership.

Last March, we had Mouse Races in Old Monroe. This fund raiser was very rewarding and most enjoyable. We plan to have Mr. Coffee and his racing rodents visit us again next year. Our club joined the Old Monroe Businessmen's Association in a Fish Fry and Street Dance last May and a Sunday Breakfast in June. The proceeds from these two well attended and profitable adventures will purchase and install playground equipment in the city's Goos Memorial Park.

The Old Monroe Lions Club was happy to give a $500.00 Scholarship Award to Winfield Senior, Curtis Walton. We also co-sponsored Winfield Band Member Jennifer Glimka to the Missouri Lions Band program in Canada.

Our fund raisers include breakfast every 3rd Sunday in the months from Sept through June and Euchre Card games every Monday night October through March. We invite everyone to come and enjoy a good time with us.

This past June, Lion Dale Burwinkle officiated at our club's induction of new officers. He also gave 24-year perfect attendance pins to three of our charter members. They are, Lions Dan Darrish (pictured left), Art Burkemper and Jim Eusterbrock. Their dedication to Lions, their country and community cannot be over stated. The Lion's motto is "We Serve" and these three Lions have lived that motto.
