FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK This year marks the onset of a new millenium and thus very special greetings to all members of the Association and their families. As alumni of this prestigious institution, we have a much bigger role to play in the development of the nation and duty towards the society. I believe that through the dint of hard work and positive attitude, we can make our alma mater proud of the achievements. The Association in the last one-year, has under gone many changes. The Alumni Directory is now available on the Internet and our own website http://www.eroorkee.com. Kindly find time to browse through it and feel free to provide your suggestions. The Association will try to implement and update to the extent possible. Also, provide necessary inputs regarding other fellow alumni so that the Association can reach out to them and build bridges of brotherhood and cooperation. Last Alumni Day saw a marked increase in the number of Jubilee Alumni who attended the function on Nov. 24, 2000. It gives a sense of pride that the Association has been able to create the feeling of Alumni family amongst its members. My visit to various chapters in USA has also demonstrated this feeling of ONE Family and I feel indebted to the love and affection showered by them. The Alumni have responded to the call of the Alma Mater and have committed to donate generously. I specially acknowledge the commitment of Mr. Raj Singh towards the establishment of a world class IT Centre as a second campus of University of Roorkee. Once again wishing a very Happy and prosperous New Year to you and your families and looking forward to meet you as and when the opportunity arises. President’s Visit to U.S.A. Mr. H.S. gratifying to know that some of the had made the mark to the category of
billionaires /and were occupying prime positions in the Information
Technology Sectors. They have contributed significantly to the U.S.

One of the outstanding alumnus Mr. Raj Ssingh of 1968 Electrical Batch, presently Chairman of the Redwood Venture Capital, ROSHNI Corporation, Firehome Communication, had set up number of companies namely, Siara, Cerent, STRATUM ONE, NEXGEN, etc. He has done proud to his alma mater and his motherland and University of Roorkee feels greatly honoured in acknowledge his significant contributions.
His favourite theme of life is to help spread education. It is highly gratifying for one to announce that he promised to donate $ 1 million for the purpose of land for the proposed second campus project of the University of Roorkee. It may be mentioned that he committed this donation in this first meeting itself. I, on my personal; behalf and in my capacity as president of RUAA, am deeply thankful for his generous donation and commitment to help re-gain the lost glory of the University of Roorkee. The entire academic community of the University of Roorkee headed by Vice Chancellor joins me in acknowledging his great commitment and contributions to the cause to his institution. Raj Singh has journeyed a long way in a life that began in Idrispur, a village near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, about 54 years ago. Since upbringing as the son of a farmer could explain his hard - driving yet simple and down - to - earth philosophy on life and his considerable successes. His background may have also taught him something about risk. He says that "continuous dreaming of the future, dedication to work, being persistent and passionate about the enterprise," are some of the reasons that he is successful, as well as, even more importantly, the advantage of having "worked in startups" for people like Suhas Patil, Atiq Raza and VCs like Vinod Khosla. The young man who once contemplated dedicating his life to the Indian Navy is now a partner with Redwood Venture Partners. With the sale of his companies Siara, Cerent and Startum One, Singh made close to $ 300 million in 1999. After completing his engineering education in India, he began his career as an engineer for the Libyan Electricity Corp. in 1980, he moved to the United States to study computer technology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Then, in 1981, he moved where every would be technology mogul should : Silicon Valley. In December of that year, he joined several startups, one of which was NexGen, a microprocessor company later purchased by Advanced Micro Devices. It was not until 1996, however, that he founded the company that would catapult him to his greatest success to date- Fiberlane Communications. By focusing on wide area network, Singh addressed a crucial niche, ensuring that the company that was started with $250,000 from Kleiner Perkins, Caufield & Byers caught the eye of other investors, like Advanced Fibre Communications and Integral Capital Partners. In 1998, Fiberlane was split into two separate entities. One, Cerent Corp., would focus on TDM multiplexors, whereas the other, Siara Systems, would add IP routing capabilities for those multi-plexors. This busy father of three is poised to take another company to the top. His latest venture is Roshni Corp., whose focus is the optical networking market. His busy and highly successful career might be the reason he says that he has little free time. When he’s able to make time, though, he likes to spend it socializing with friends. He credits a large part of his success to taking risks and working with people who are smarter than him and by "not micromanaging but empowering your subordinates." * Courtsy: Jawahara Saidullah - April 2000 Issue, Siliconindia | |
