Empty Space Rune Master is a roleplaying game set in a fantasy world of extreme danger. Players take the part of heroic characters whose life of adventuring has the ultimate goal of mastering the runes.

These runes are the very basis of the world. In the beginning there was unbridled chaos, a reality whose form changed moment to moment. Entities sprang into being and lapsed into formlessness.

This lasted until the First God came into existance and discovered The Runes. The First God quested after and mastered one rune after another until he (or she -- the term really has no meaning here) knew them all. After mastering the God Rune he exerted his divine will and created the world of Hytolon.

After him came others who sought for and won the Runes. These other gods are known by names such as Arlios, Mentos, Thrim, Nyktar, Parton, Yll and Meth and are worshipped by men. Some humans who devote their lives to this pursuit still master a rune or two, and some fewer still master most. But only rarely does a human life extend long enough to master them all and become a demigod.
