WASHINGTON --
"We hope we can get a deal. That's the top priority, to get a contract. It's very hard to work together when you don't have a contract," PMG Bill Henderson, said yesterday during a wide-ranging discussion at a breakfast meeting with postal union and management association publication editors at headquarters in Washington, DC recently.
"We want to change the grievance process so there is more accountability in it, and I'm talking about management accountability. We'd like to have no unresolved items at the end of negotiations."
Concerning recent stepped-up attacks on the United States Postal Service by FedEx and UPS, Henderson described companies as, "Two profiteers assaulting good government.
"The Postal Service is changing people's opinion on government," he said. "We have no unfair advantage. We're simply a much better organization. Look at the UPS strike. Nobody expected us to carry that load. We changed the marketplace.
"UPS and FedEx want us to have a competitive disadvantage," Mr. Henderson said, but noted that "the idea of making the Postal Service less competitive makes no sense."
Concerning USPS contract with Emery to transport Priority Mail, Henderson said it's "nonsensical to think that we are privatizing. We're not. We're trying to grow Priority Mail." That, Henderson said, would mean more jobs not fewer.
