ASTRO*CARD

HP-48GX/SX Internal Ephemeris Module

GENERAL: ASTRO*CARD is a ROM module for the HP-48GX/SX containing extremely accurate internal ephemeris generation for sun and Polaris observations through the year 2010 with no updates required. Designed primarily for use with internal clock and calculation of azimuth while occupying the field station, the module can be conveniently used for office calculations as well. Programs can be run with or without a printer. Comes with complete, explicit user instructions; however, routines and options are easily learned. Module developed by authors of the Celestial Observation Handbook and Ephemeris (Sokkia Corporation).

INPUT: Depends on selected options. Minimum required input is latitude and longitude.

CALCULATOR CONFIGURATION: HP-48GX or HP-48SX with 2K of free memory.

ACCURACY SPECIFICATIONS: (design period 1965 through 2020 with no updates):

SUN:

Maximum GHA error: 2.2" (90% of time <1.0"). Maximum declination error: 1.4" (90% of time <1.0").

The above errors result in a maximum error in azimuth of 3.3 arc-seconds (90% of the time less than 1.5 arc-seconds) when the sun's altitude is at 40 degrees. Error decreases as altitude decreases.

POLARIS:

Maximum error in azimuth is 0.6 arc-seconds for observations made at 60°N latitude. Maximum error is 0.4 arc-seconds at 40°N latitude.

IBM PC Internal Ephemeris Diskette

GENERAL: ASTRO*DISK is a single diskette for the IBM and compatibles containing extremely accurate internal ephemeris generation for reduction of sun and Polaris observation data. The design period is through the year 2020 with no updates required. Astro-traverse allows carrying latitude/longitude position for subsequent astro-azimuth observations. Conversion of latitude and longitude to state plane coordinates and inverse. Data input is interactive. Comes with complete, explicit user instructions. Diskette developed by the coauthors of the Sokkia ephemeris.

INPUT/OUTPUT: Choice of input: manual interactive or read from a disk file. Choice of output: printer, screen or write to a disk file. Input data can be saved on disk. All files are in ASCII code and can be examined using the TYPE command or can be opened in wordpad.

COMPUTER CONFIGURATION: IBM PC, or compatible, using MS-DOS, 256K RAM, printer not required but desirable. Can be used with or without math coprocessor. Also can be run in the windows environment.

Maximum GHA error: 1.5" (98% of time <1.0"). Maximum declination error: 0.5".

The above errors result in a maximum error in azimuth of 1.9 arc-seconds (98% of the time less than 1.4 arc-seconds) when the sun's altitude is at 40 degrees. Error decreases as altitude decreases.

POLARIS:

Maximum error in azimuth is 0.6 arc-seconds for observations made at 60°N latitude. Maximum error is 0.4 arc-seconds at 40°N latitude.

GENERAL: ASTRO*DISK34 is a single diskette for the IBM and compatibles containing extremely accurate internal ephemeris generation for reduction of sun, Polaris and star observation data. The design period is through the year 2030 with no updates required. In addition there is a special algorithim for the sun and polaris from 2005 through 2030 that has accuracy suitable for first-order geodetic surveying. Based on the J2000 Epoch, all 1535 FK5 star coordinates can be accessed directly from an included file. Up to and including 34 pointings can be taken per observation.

INPUT/OUTPUT: Choice of input: manual interactive or read from a disk file. Choice of output: printer, screen or write to a disk file. Input data can be saved on disk. All files are in ASCII code and can be examined using the TYPE command or opened in wordpad.

POLARIS:

Within the design period of 2005 through 2030 maximum GHA error is 0.1" and maximum declination error is 0.01". Outside of this design period, azimuth errors in the mid latitudes may reach 0.4".

STARS:

For stars whose delination is less than 70 degrees (north or south) the maximum GHA and declination error is 0.2".

GENERAL: UTM provides a conversion from geographical position to universal transverse Mercator coordinates and the inverse. Since this is a world wide projection there is a choice of twelve different ellipsoids including those used by NAD27 and NAD83. The program is valid for latitudes up to 84 degrees north and 80 degrees south. The polar areas are covered by the universal polar stereographic projection, program UPS, which is also included on the disk.

SPC83*Card

*GROUND TO GRID, LAT. & LONG. TO SPC and INVERSE*

HP48GX/SX Module

GENERAL: SPC83*Card is a ROM module for the HP-48GX or HP-48SX calculator which converts ground (surface) distances to grid distances and inverse with single point and traverse options. It converts geodetic to grid azimuth and inverse. It also converts latitude and longitude to NAD83 state plane coordinates and inverse. All State zones within the conterminous USA, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are included. A Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) option is also included along with a choice of 13 standard ellipsoids.

INPUT: Manual, depends on options. Minimum for ground to grid is direction and distance. For state plane coordinates it is latitude & longitude or state plane coordinates.

OUTPUT: Calculator display, IR printer and/or saved in a file in list format.

CALCULATOR CONFIGURATION: HP-48GX or HP-48SX with 3k of free memory.

ACCURACY SPECIFICATIONS: Coordinates accurate to within one millimeter when used within the designated or adjacent SPC zone.

PROGRAM FEATURES:

• Convert ground (surface) measurements to grid and inverse with the following options:
  • Single points radially from a single point.
  • Ground traverse to grid traverse using distances and azimuths or distances and angles measured to the right.
  • Grid coordinates of two or more points to ground distances and azimuths. This can be done with radial points or traverse.
• Convert geodetic azimuth to grid azimuth and inverse.
• Convert latitude & longitude to state plane coordinates and inverse. This includes all 122 zones in the NAD83 system.
• State plane coordinates can be entered and displayed in meters, international or survey feet.
