| PCRMC provides volunteer opportunities for students |
| by Lauren Lutz |
Every summer students at RJHS and RHS are given the opportunity to participate in candy striping at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). Candy striping is a volunteer program for students that allows them to gain experience working with others. Student volunteers in departments ranging from Intensive Care Units and the Emergency Room to Educational Services and Hospitality, gain a head start for applying to colleges.
Sophomore Levi Crump said, “It was a great learning experience and it was fun to work with others and get hands on experience in the medical profession.”
Emily Barnes, who is in charge of volunteers at PCRMC, said, “It allows students to get exposed to all different aspects of medicine, as well as giving them something to put on applications when applying for college.”
When candy striping at any hospital students can expect to do any of the following: running samples to the lab, transporting patients to different floors, making copies, delivering flowers, reading and talking to patients, feeding those who can’t feed themselves, cleaning rooms, making beds, pushing the hospitality cart and delivering food. When asked about her experience candy striping, junior Phillis Pattison said, “I’m very interested in the medical field, so I thought it would be a great way to start getting involved in the profession. It was definitely an all around positive experience and it was a good feeling to be helping those who really need it.”
No matter what they did or where they worked, everyone agreed that volunteering at PCRMC through the candy striping program was a good learning experience and a lot of fun.
