Phelps County Disaster Committee Meeting Minutes, Tuesday, September 9, 2008 Phelps County Courthouse Present: McMillan, Waltman, Walls, Caton, Halinar, Hashagen, Harvey, Williams, Brekke (FEMA guest), Grisham, Pasley (SEMA guest), Duncan, Rueff Minutes and Introductions: PCDC Chairman Buz Harvey called the meeting to order at 10:00 am in the general meeting room of the Phelps County Courthouse. Minutes of the previous meeting were not available. Introductions were made and email addresses confirmed. The minutes are normally available at: www.rollanet.org/~disaster Program Grant Status: A general discussion of the last round of SEMA grants was held, and the group was told that Phelps County decided not to pursue funding for the latest round of grants. They were also told that SEMA/FEMA had restricted funding in the grants that essentially eliminated any funding that would go to an administrative agency such as MRPC. Without an administrative home for grant administration, the decision was made to cease seeking funds from these sources. Homeland Security Oversight Committee: No report. FEMA Presentation: Cheryl Brekke told the group that FEMA was seeking volunteers to assist them in contacting those individuals and families who were victims of the 2008 floods in Missouri. Training would be available to those volunteers who would then be able to contact victims in rural areas of the state and help them get the resources they need from the federal government. There are, according to Brekke, currently 89 households in the immediate area that have indicated a need for assistance pursuant to the flooding of the spring and summer of 2008. She believed that 20 to 25 volunteers were needed to make contact with them. An extended discussion took place regarding volunteer recruitment, training, the location of the training and other logistical issues. Edna Bridges of the American Red Cross agreed to contact the local ministerial alliance to determine if they would seek such volunteers within their congregation and report back to the COAD coordinator, Connie Grisham. Medical Reserve Corps: No Report. Neighborhood Watch: No report. Shelters: No report. Incident Support: No Report. General Information: The next meeting will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the Courthouse. Any member can call a meeting if needed between now and then. Respectfully submitted, Buz Harvey |
