Wireless H/PC Pro

I know, I know I’ve got to get a light for my DV cam if I’m gonna keep using it in still mode.  I’m too used to having that flash on a regular still camera.

Anyway, this is the laundry room inside the house.  Here we find:

Raylink wireless access point.  The backbone of my whole 2mbit wireless system.  Below you’ll see the broken screen laptop with my handheld pc sitting on top of it to show the BIG difference in size.  SVGA monitor.  Accton switch [managed]. and on the floor, a nice cyrix 166 used as an emulator box.

Here is the centerpiece of wireless operations:

NEC Mobile pro 770.  The PCMCIA card on top of the unit is a Symbol Spectrum24 wireless NIC.  LA-3020 to be exact.  802.11 standard which is 2mbit FHSS.  It works flawlessly with the Raylink AP which is also 802.11.  The Raylink PC cards I have do NOT have WinCE drivers so i had to get the Symbol off ebay.  I must say that Symbol has an awesome CE driver with full diagnostics and utilities befitting a laptop or desktop.  Excellent work.  With the ‘lid’ raised you can see the keyboard which has been fairly easy to master and comfortable with the exception of the arrow keys which are not in the traditional inverted T formation.  Lower right you see a shot of my most used application.  IrcCE, and IRC client for WinCE.  The only one actually.  It is bare bones and lacks some basic feature one would expect, but that’s the way it goes.  If you see WebMonkey|wireless, most likely this is the box I’m on at the time.

If you have questions/comments on/about wireless, email me.  Just don’t tell me how much better 802.11b is.  Yes it’s faster but the 802.11 stuff is cheaper and more reliable in ‘noisy’ areas.  ebay rules.

This box has completely replaced my laptop.  It cannot do everything the laptop could of course, but it does everything ‘I’ did on my laptop.  Internet explorer, read my email, VNC to the other machines on my lan.  mp3 playback, pocket movies, ebooks and more.  With the wireless NIC in place i can browse any machine on my lan and use any resouorce they contain from mp3 to books.  Unlike other pocket solutions, this box acts like any other client on my lan.  You just open Windows Explorer and type [or save a ‘favorite’] \\computer\ and it will display folders of shares you have setup on that computer.  Click away.
