Bennett & Bennett, LLC - Useful Stuff for Attorneys

  • New Stuff on This Page

This page is dedicated to my friends and colleagues of the Phelps County Bar Association and the 25th Judicial Circuit of Missouri. It is intended to be a collection of links and information that may be of interest to attorneys, but that did not exactly fit in on any of my other public information pages. The emphasis here is on law practice rather than on substantive law, and I intend to minimize the number of links that are duplicated from my other web-pages. If you want a page for doing legal research, jump to my Missouri and Federal Legal Reference Page. If you are interested in representation of children, jump to my Guardian Ad Litem Resource Page. All of my pages are always Under Construction as I find and add new material, so check back from time to time.

Check out Central Missouri Child Advocacy Law Center - a non-profit corporation to provide guardian ad litem services for children in abuse/neglect cases, provide resources for attorneys serving as guardians ad litem, and generally work to improve the representation of children in our courts.

    Missouri-Specific Links

  • Of course you all know about the State of Missouri web page, but did you also know that they have recently added an E-Mail Directory of Missouri state government employees?
  • The Missouri Bar and BAMSL both have web-sites, but so far most of the content seems to be intended for the general public rather than for attorneys. Both sites do have listings of meetings and CLE events.
  • MoBarCLE Books Now On LOIS CD-ROM - the special price offer has been extended to March 7, 1997 - contact Charlie Griggs at LOIS for more info or to place an order.

Good Stuff at the American Bar Association

  • The Law Practice Management section has too many useful areas to list them all - just go there and see for yourself. Any of you who have read the Technology Update column by G. Burgess Allison in the LPM section magazine will be happy to learn that all of his columns since 10/93 are available on-line; if you haven't read his column before, I urge you to check it out.
  • The General Practice, Solo & Small Firm section doesn't have quite as much content as the LPM section (yet!), but be sure and scan all the way to the bottom of the page for a listing of on-line articles. The section magazine, The Compleat Lawyer, has listings of contents of past issues but (so far) no actual articles on-line. More useful is the page for SOLO, the section newsletter, which has the text of recent articles available for reading and/or downloading.

    Discussion Groups (w/ commentary)

  • An internet mailing list is a service that you subscribe to (generally for free) for discussion of a particular topic. When anyone sends e-mail to the mailing list central address, the message is re-mailed to everyone on the list. If you have something you want to discuss, you send a message to the list. If anyone has a response for you, they can either send it to you privately or send it to the list, so that everyone gets it.

  • The ABA supports several mailing lists; click here for more info on the subject matter of the available lists and how to subscribe; click here for a catalog of the ABA mailing lists. I can personally recommend the Solosez mailing list for discussion of issues of solo and small firm law practice, and the Child-Court list for discussion of juvenile court improvement projects and representation of children. A net.friend has also recommended the Family Law list, but I haven't signed up yet.

  • Here is a list of law-related mailing lists from Burgess Allison's book The Lawyer's Guide to the Internet. The Legal Domain Network is a searchable archive of law-related mailing lists and Usenet newsgroups. Here is a list of Selected E-Mail and Listserv Lists from The Legal List at Lawyers Cooperative Publishing.

  • A similar list of net.connected attorneys from all over Missouri is maintained by Dave Browning as an informal discussion section of the MoBar Technology committee. This group is now in the process of planning several demonstrations for the next MoBar Small Firm Conference next spring. Again, this is not a "real" mailing list, just a bunch of addresses that you paste into the "CC:" field of any message that you want to send to the whole group. To join the list, contact Dave Browning.

  • I'm not a big fan of Usenet newsgroups (too much jabber, too many flames), so I can't really give any recommendations as to any of the law-related newsgroups. If someone who is familiar with these wants to make recommendations (or give warning of a newsgroup to stay out of) just e-mail me and I will post it here.

  • I used to "hang out" in the CompuServe Legal Forum (LAWSIG), but haven't spent much time there lately. Now that I have discovered the Solosez mailing list for getting knowledgable answers to questions about law office technology, I will probably drop my Compu$erve membership entirely. If you are a member of CompuServe, you can check out the Legal Forum with the command GO LAWSIG.

    Searching the World Wide Web

  • HotBot allows you to search based on any words included in the text of a web page.
  • Yahoo presents a heirarchical structure for locating web pages by topic.
  • InfoSeek - my new favorite - like HotBot, but better
  • MetaCrawler lets you submit your search to several different search engines all at once.
  • Starting Points lets you connect to all of the major search sites and other general indexes.
  • There are plenty of other search engines, but these are the ones I use most.

    Miscellaneous Useful Links

  • Brief Reporter includes a *huge* bank of legal briefs on almost every topic
  • Basic Legal Citation is an abridged version of the Blue Book, available on-line in case you are working on a brief away from the office and need to know how to cite an obscure treaty relating to the export of rocks (or something similarly exciting).
  • Lawyers Weekly USA
  • Your Small Office is the web-site of Home Office Computing magazine, and has useful stuff for any person running a small business (such as a law office!).
  • Remember those TV commercials where the client calls and complains that a certain package hasn't arrived yet, and the secretary calls the delivery company to get confirmation that not only was the package delivered, but it was signed for by Mr. Smith? Here are the web pages to check delivery status for UPS, FedEx, and Airborne Express.
  • Here is a utility page from the Postal Service to find zip codes.
  • MapQuest! has interactive maps that allow you to submit an address and see a map with "X" marking the spot; you can also save your own customized points of interest for future reference. This service has been pretty reliable when I tested it out on various addresses that I knew the location of, but it was way off once when I used it to try to find a place I needed to get to in Jefferson City (fortunately I left early for the meeting, and was still able to make it on time).
  • The Christian Legal Society is an organization of attorneys, judges, and other legal professionals holding certain basic Christian beliefs and seeking to integrate their beliefs into their professional lives.
  • ALI-ABA Committee on Continuing Legal Education Home Page
  • InterNIC is where you go to register an internet domain name (such as "rollanet.org")
  • Family Law Advisor Home Page
  • Web Counsel, LLC Home Page - Website Design and Internet Based Marketing (aimed at attorneys and law firms) - has some interesting articles
