LESSONS LEARNED (LL) / BEST PRACTICES (BP)
- Case Study: Risk
Management Methodology and Lessons Learned - Abstract: This
paper follows the problem of implementing standard risk management methodology
as used on the USAF Boost Surveillance and Tracking System (BSTS) Missile
Defense Program and applying that methodology to an Australian Air Defence
System Programme. Problems involved understanding of the risk assessment
questions by the design engineers, risk data collection and processing
methods, audit & review techniques, presentation techniques, etc. The
methodology and revisions thereto are described. Problems and why they
occurred are discussed. Lessons learned and how they can be applied to
programs in the future are covered. Standard and well-known Risk Management
approaches find many problems when a rigid and formal risk management structure
is imposed on young Australian and UK design engineers who have not been
exposed to such a program.
