Management: Some Lessons Learned - Abstract: In February
1993, the Software Technology Support Center (STSC) presented their first
project management workshop. This workshop launched the project management
domain and formed the beginning of an ongoing relationship with U.S. Air
Force, Department of Defense (DoD), and commercial customers to provide
project management technology adoption assistance. As the Software Engineering
Institute's Capability Maturity Model became more widely known, the interest
in project management and its identified key processes and associated activities
has increased. Their experience in the project management domain has led
them to develop a set of themes or subject areas that make up the whole
of the project management experience. These themes have been used as the
basis for developing questions that facilitate reviewing and evaluating
an organization's capability for project management. The purpose of this
article is to introduce these themes, give a brief description of each,
and share a few important lessons learned stated as rules to follow. The
themes they discuss include requirements, goals and outcomes, project plans,
project leadership, project team involvement, project implementation and
control, risk management, implementation support, personnel development
and management, and a formalized development process.
