Marti's Sewing and Crafting Table
Sewing is an ancient art (as in clear back to the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together)! You can see it for yourself in Genesis 3:7 in the Bible. Crafting, or handwork of any kind, goes way back there too. I bet Adam and Eve came up with some really nice things. Afterall, since it was just them and the flora and fauna, they needed to create some home dec items, and eventually a bigger wardrobe, not to mention baby clothes!
Sewing and crafting have been fun and practical all down the ages, and for us, too. If you're new to sewing or the many kinds of crafting, I challenge you to learn to do something well. Try to find just the right 'love', and become really good at it. If you already have some sewing-crafting experience, then find ways to stretch into new skill areas. It keeps your mind stimulated, relieves stress and gives you tangible evidence of your creativity and productivity. It's a great way to express your good feelings towards family and friends (it's a fact that most people appreciate a handmade gift over store-bought, even if the item is something they don't need, because caring and thoughtfulness are included with the gift).
My passion is quilting, but I've been sewing since I was about 11. My mother got this wild hare of an idea to be a 4-H leader and teach sewing. I was forced to participate. While my younger sister whizzed her way through setting sleeves, I was seam-ripping. When she was beaming with pride over her perfectly installed zipper, I was seam-ripping, and when she elegantly modelled her outfit at the Tehama County Fair in Red Bluff, California, I looked merely dumpy in my crooked, idiotic not-in-fashion drawstring apron. I cried many a tear as I discoved I sewed in sleeves upside down or inside out, zippers upside down (I'm not kidding!) and collars sideways. My buttonholes were unmentionable. Even my hems looked like someone had nailed a tarp to a barn wall with railroad spikes. In short, I hated sewing because I was so bad at it! Nearly everyone who has ever told me they don't sew, have reported experiences like mine. I sure know how they feel! An interesting thing happened to me to cause me to sew voluntarily: I couldn't afford to buy clothes! Until I got a job in my teens, I learned that I could make something to wear way, way cheaper than it could be bought. Eventually, when I could afford to buy ready-mades, I couldn't bring myself to buy something that I could make for "a fraction of the cost". Now I enjoy sewing for the artistic and skilled craft that it is, and I have the added satisfaction of knowing that I've saved the family budget thousands of dollars on clothing and home dec items. Click here to see my favorite sewing machine of all time. Oh, what Eve could have done if she had one of these!
As for crafts, I'm one of those people who has done every conceivable handcraft, except maybe for goldsmithing and Kurdish felt making. Eventually I gave up dating, and got married to Quilting. We've been married since 1987, and have dozens of children with funny names like Ohio Star and Drunkard's Path. Listed below is the beginning of a collection of links to some of my favorite sewing- and craft-related places on the 'Net. Have fun!
