This is a little gallery of quilts made by me, my daughters, friends, relatives, etc. Some of the pictures are pictures of pictures and have lost something in the translation. As I have the time, I plan to improve them.
Here are 2 rows of my daughter Christine's row by row swap onthe Internet. Can you
guess what the subject of her quilt is going to be?
The quilt on the left is a friendship quilt made by the quilters at #QuiltChat Virtual Quilt Guild for a special person in #QuiltChat and her mother and father, 'Merrybee' and Mr and Mrs Berti. It was made as a family encouragement while Merry's dad was very ill. It arrived just after he passed away. Merry said holding the quilt between them helped Merry and her mother to finally cry and grieve out loud. The blocks come from all over the US, with a few from Canada and even Iceland. It was assembled by 'flowergirl', machine quilted by 'fancyq2' and bound by me, 'TinyNedl'.
I constructed the pinwheel scrap quilt, on the right, while listening to the senate confirmation hearings concerning Clarence Thomas being appointed to the US Supreme Court. I think of it as my 'Clarence Thomas Quilt'.
On the left is this sofa-throw size quilt I made to...well, throw over the back of the sofa. While digging in my stash I came across a bag of 3" squares in blues. I still don't remember ever cutting them out, but I had to have, since I recognize all the fabrics as being mine! I made the quilt between the December and January meetings of my local guild, pieced and quilted by hand. [I must not have been doing anything else day or night!] I decided to skew the blocks to make the plain 9-patch more interesting, and I added the rainbow colored sashing for fun.
At right: When I first started quilting, I saw a wonderful picture of an old, old coffee cup quilt. There were 100 cups on it. I loved it, but I knew I wasn't patient enough to make that many blocks, so I made a quilt with GIGANTIC blocks -- only 25 of them! I was always disappointed with this big-cup quilt because I had the image of the one in the book in my head.
Ten years later: I appliqued 3" cups onto 4½" blocks -- 196 of them. The backgrounds are muslins, off-whites, homespuns, creams, etc. The sashing is a gradated rainbow going from the upper left corner down to the lower right corner. I hand appliqued, machine pieced and hand quilted this one. It's a little too small for our bed, so it hangs in the entryway near the front door. I thought this quilt would take years to make, but from start to finish, it was only 3 or 4 months, because I worked on it a little every day. On the right is its pieced back, all coffee prints.
At left: I made this quilt for my oldest son's 13th year, in the design of his choosing, a Confederate flag. It's machine pieced, hand appliqued, hand quilted. He's 23 now, and displays it on his wall.
On the right is the quilt I made for my oldest daughter for her 13th year. She chose all the blocks. Some of them commemorate special events, some are just favorite patterns.
On the left is my youngest son's 13 year quilt. He chose the blocks to represent his favorite things, like potato soup, his 4 best friends, computers, etc. He's standing next to it at the Piece and Plenty Quilt Guild's bi-annual quilt show.
At right:This quilt is a sampler made from the blocks of the month in a little church quilt group I used to lead. Each month in addition to the blocks I made for the swap, I also made 2 blocks in reds and pinks. At the end of the year I had enough for this quilt. It was auctioned off for over $500 to raise money for a church youth group trip.
I made this this little block and bordered it as a thank-you gift for a home school friend to represent the combination of home and school. It's hand appliqued and machine pieced and hand quilted.
More quilts will be coming soon. I want to show you what my daughters and I have been up to...
