Knitted Granny Ornament

I made this ornament to commemorate my own grandmother, Reata Galusha Hughes, who is 100 years old! To make this little granny, knit it with yarn scraps and a little piece of twisted wire for the glasses. This pattern would also be good for finger puppets. Refer to photo. I suggest you make one as a sample first.

For skirt, using size 3 needles, cast on 17. Knit 1 row, purl 1 row for 20 rows total. Every 3 rows, change color of yarn for striped dressed effect. The last 5 or 6 rows should be her skin color. Gather the top very tightly, then stitch the two sides closed, make a good knot. Set aside. For her arms, cast on 12 stitches in sleeve color. Bind off the 12 stitches.
With a large needle, sew a few skin - color stitches on the ends of the arms for hands. Carry a yarn tail through Granny's neck to pull arm through. Stop when arms are even. Using brown embroidery thread or brown yarn, sew a stitches for hair. I stitched a bun on top of her head. Make eyes with black beads or black yarn stitches, and a mouth with a little red thread. Bend a thin wire into 2 loops and 'ear pieces' for glasses. Just shove them in place. Finally, attach a piece of invisible or metallic thread for a hanger.
