How to Make a Cup of Coffee Before You Wake Up
by Marti Anderson
Slam fist down on alarm clock. Miss clock, knock over lamp. Drag out of bed, yank clock cord from socket to stop alarm, stagger to bathroom. Open one eye. Shuffle and limp into kitchen. Stub toe on chair, hiss expletives. Feel way along counter to coffee maker. Get out coffee filters. Spend 3 minutes prying just one filter away from the rest. Put crumpled filter in basket. Cross kitchen to dishwasher for coffee scoop. Stub toe on chair. Clamp teeth together sucking in air until pain passes. Pick dried crud off of edge of scoop. Cross kitchen to refrigerator, open freezer. Dodge falling pork roast and individual burritos. Get out coffee beans. Cram roast back into overfull freezer. Stuff burritos onto door shelf. Feel way back to coffee maker. Reach for grinder, snag sleeve on refrigerator magnet, dropping bag of beans. Rake up spilled beans with fingers. Pull out dog hairs and shrivelled shred of cheese, drop beans in grinder hopper. Turn it on, realize it's unplugged, fumble for outlet behind canisters while muttering under breath about family members who go overboard unplugging appliances because there's a 30% chance of thunderstorms. Turn grinder knob to "dust" setting. Grind, but don't wait for the last few beans to go down. Dump coffee into filter basket. Turn on coffee maker. Wait 5 minutes, doze off leaning against countertop. Gradually realize you don't hear coffee happening. Stare at machine. Remember that no water was added. Open cabinet door for water container, dodge falling popcorn packets and box of Jello. Stumble to sink, fill container to top. Turn around, spill 7 ounces cold water on feet. Open second eye. Wide. Make way back to coffee machine, pour water into little trap door, spilling only 4 or 5 ounces on dry filters on counter. Listen for dribble sound. Slouch to table, perch rear halfway on chair, doze. Drag to coffee machine, forget to get cup. Cross kitchen to mug rack. Choose closest mug. Glance in cup, see live spider. Throw cup to floor jumping back to miss pottery shards. Get 2nd cup, checking for spiders. Pick way through broken cup pieces to coffee machine. Pour coffee. Wrap hands around cup, start to feel better. Shuffle to living room sofa. Sit in sun. Let coffee cool, doze off. Wake 35 minutes later, sip cold coffee. Grimace. Drink it anyway. Feel better, sweep up broken cup. Pour second cup. Enjoy it. Draw strength from it. Smile.
Below is just the tiniest sampling of available coffee-related web-sites. These sites are best viewed while sipping a cup of coffee. If you don't take the time to fix yourself a cup now, believe me, you'll be craving it before you get halfway through this list! Go ahead, I'll wait. Be sure to check out the cool recipe at the bottom.
