Beaded Ornament Cover For a 2 ˝“ Ball

General: Use a fine beading needle and about 3 feet of quality thread. (Cheap stuff is too weak.) ‘Try on’ the netting as you go to make sure it will be large enough or small enough, and to make sure you like the colors. It’s easier to bead on a table or other surface than to hold it in your lap. You need 3 colors of beads for this project. The main color (a) should go nicely with the color of glass ball ornament you’re using. For best results, make colors b and c highly contrasting with the main color so they’ll show up well at all the bead intersections. When it’s time to make your thread longer, simply tie a new thread to the old in a square knot, trim the tails to about 1/8 “. These instructions are for a glass ball with a 2.5” diameter, but it can be used on a 3” ball by adding a couple additional rows of 4, 5 and/or 6.

1) Ring: Make circle of 40 seed beads, color a. Run the thread through all the beads a couple times to create a strong ring.
2) Row 1: Pick up 2 color a, 1 b, 1c, 1b, 2 a. Join to 4th bead ahead.
3) Go through the next 3 beads and come out in the 4th bead. Repeat #2 all the way around. There should be 9 little ‘petals’ in a circle.

4) Run needle through beads until it comes out at the point of the first petal.
5) Row 2: Pick up 1 b, 7 a, 1 b; go through the tip bead of the next petal. Continue all the way around. Come out the center bead of the 1st petal.
6) Row 3: Pick up 5 a, 1 b, 1 c, 1 b, 5 a. Run needle through to the tip of each petal as before; continue all the way around and come out at the tip of the first petal.

7) Row 4: Pick up 1 b, 13 a, 1 b; join at tips as before.
8) Row 5: Pick up 6 a, 1 b, 1 c, 1 b, 6 a, join.
9) Row 6: Pick up 1 b, 13 a, 1 b, join.

10) Row 7: Pick up 6 a, 1 b, 1 c, 1 b, 6 a, join.
11) Row 8: Pick up 1 b, 13 a, 1 b, join.
12) Row 9: Pick up 5 a, 1 b, 1 c, 1 b, 5 a, join. At this point you may need to place the bead net over the capless ornament, as the stitching will tighten around the bottom of the ball.
13) Row 10: Pick up 1 b, 5 a, 1 b, join.
14) Row 11: Pick up 1 a, 1 b, 1 c, 1 b, 1 a, join.
15) Row 12: Pick up 1 or 2 b, join, repeat all the way around, pulling the thread tight.
16) Run the needle through the little ring of beads at least 2 times, tie off and trim threads. Dab clear nail polish on any visible threads, weak places. Apply polish around base of ball neck which will glue the beads to the ball for extra security. Put cap back on, add a pretty hanger.

Variation 1: Same as above, but instead of a little flower motif at the intersections, there's a little dot of color at the intersections.

14) Row 11: Pick up 1 or 2 a, join, repeat all the way around, pulling the thread tight.
15) Run the needle through the little ring of beads at least 2 times, tie off and trim threads.

Variation 2: Work rows 1 – 7 as above, then keep repeating rows 6 and 7 to create a little “skirt”. When making the last row, add a drop bead to the center of the motif all the way around.
