The Pine/Online office is supported by generous donations from individuals and businesses in the community and RollaNet members.
Location620 N. Pine Street Rolla, MO 65401 Phone: 573-364-0852 Fax: 573-364-9627 Days and Hours of Operation Monday - Friday 10:00 - 5:30 Closed Sat. and Sun. RollaNet's Pine/Online office was unofficially opened in November, 1998, with our official Grand Opening celebration being held on January 27, 1999. In addition to providing office space for RollaNet, Pine/Online offers high-speed Internet access on public computers available for use by the entire community. In April 2002, the original computers and software were upgraded to provide even faster connections and additional features. Our Pine/Online office is supported by donations from our contributing members as well as organizations and individuals in the greater Rolla area who wish to make computers and online access available to everyone. The office has features and benefits for everyone, even those who have a computer of their own at home. Equitable access Computers and technology are more important than ever. RollaNet's Pine/Online project ensures that everyone in Rolla and the surrounding community has access to this technology. You don't have to be a RollaNet member to use the office. The use of the equipment and software for RollaNet contributing members is a nominal fee of $1 per hour, and available to everyone else for a low fee of $3 per hour. You do not have to own your own computer to have Internet access and email!High-speed Internet access The public computers at Pine/Online are connected to RollaNet's primary network through an SDSL - Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. SDSL provides 2Mbit bandwidth for both uplink and downlink which provides a connection roughly 60 times faster than a 33.6 modem at maximum bandwidth. In addition to providing Internet access to those who do not own their own computers, many individuals use our public computers when their own computers are being repaired, or simply to take advantage of high-speed downloads of large files. Laser printers and flat-bed scanner Our office has both a blank and white and a color laser printer. We also have a flat-bed scanner for handy scanning of documents or photos. Come in and scan your favorite photo, then print it in color! Note: we charge a small fee to print, which helps to cover the cost of paper and toner. You will need to bring your own specialty paper if you prefer it, such as glossy photo paper. Online community information By providing easy-to-use software, specialized equipment, and training opportunities to individuals and organizations, we hope to help everyone to be an information provider, whether you own a computer or not. Non-profit community organizations are welcome to use our equipment and software to establish a web page on our server for free. If you don't know how to create one, we'll provide a basic web page for you with information you provide. RollaNet members, whether contributing members or not, may also establish a web page on our server. Family-friendly We want Pine/Online to be an especially fun place for families, from kids to seniors. Access to the Internet is not restricted by software; however, users should use good judgement about what is displayed on their screen or printed, considering the public/family nature of the facility. For more information on this subject, please review the Usage Guidelines. Our Pine/Online office features a Kiddie Corner, where we have a computer without Internet access loaded with quality, age-appropriate software for children. Additional services and training opportunities RollaNet's Pine/Online has the location and equipment to offer free computer-related short courses to the community. Short courses currently being offered include basic computer, Internet, Web Design, Kiddie Classes, Microsoft Office products like Word, and special-topic courses such as Genealogy on the Internet.
