Samba for Windows 95

This document describes the setup and use of Samba under Windows 95 to provide direct access to your home directory (files) on RollaNet without using FTP. Samba allows your RollaNet home directory to be "mapped" so that it appears as another disk drive under Windows 95.

To access a Samba drive you will need to be connected to RollaNet. When you disconnect your network session you will lose access to the Samba drive. The drive can be setup to reconnect every time you login to RollaNet if you desire.

One of the conventions which will be used here is a series of items one right after another which specify things to click on or double click on. The items will be by the name that they show up with when you initially install Windows 95. (i.e. Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add New Hardware. This says go to the start button and click on it, then click on the settings, then the Control Panel, then double click on Add New Hardware.)

Step one: Add Microsoft Client for Networks

My Computer | Control Panel | Network. If the Client for Microsoft Networks appears, proceed to step 2. Click the Add button, click Client, click Add, click Microsoft, click Client for Microsoft Networks (if not already highlighted), and click OK. You will return to the Network panel and Client for Microsoft Networks should have been added to the list. Stay in the Network panel and proceed to step 2.

Step two: Add protocol NetBEUI

If the NetBEUI protocol is in the list, proceed to step 3. Click the Add button, click Protocol, click Add, click Microsoft, click NetBEUI, and click OK. You will return to the Network panel and NetBEUI should have been added to the list. Stay in the Network panel and proceed to step 3.

Step three:Configure TCP/IP

Click on TCP/IP, click on properities. A window with six different property tabs (little tabs at the top of the window) will open up which has IP Address, WINS configuration, Gateway, DNS Configuration, Advanced, and Bindings. Each one has settings for dial-up.

  • WINS Configuration: Enable WINS Resolution should be checked.
  • Primary WINS Server: 192.55.114.3
Click OK, click OK to leave Network panel. Windows 95 will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy! When prompted click OK to restart your computer. When the system restarts proceed to step 4.

Step four: Mapping Network Drive

Before you continue with step 4. Let's check one thing first. In our procedures to setup Windows 95 dial-in, there is one option that should be checked that we didn't mention. Now that you're interested in using Samba, you may need to make a change to your RollaNet connection icon properties.

Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon, right-click on your RollaNet connection icon, and choose Properties... Press the Server Types... button. You'll get the Server Types dialog box. In the Advanced options section, place a checkmark by Log on to Network if necessary. Then, press the OK button. Now you're ready to continue.

In this step you will "map" you RollaNet home directory as a network drive using the Windows Explorer program.

Start | Programs | Windows Explorer

Once in Explorer, click Tools, slide the mouse to Map network drive and select. The Map Network Drive dialog should appear. You now need to set the Path line. The path should be entered as:

\\samba\userid

For example, if your userid is "freddy" you would enter \\samba\freddy

Click Reconnect at login if you want the drive to be available automatically every time you logon to RollaNet. Click OK and a password dialog will appear. Click Save this password in your password list if you do not want to enter the password every time you map the drive. Type your password in the dialog box and click OK.

The drive should be added to the Explorer drive list and should now be available. You can use this drive just like any other drive for saving files/programs in. Remember this a network based drive and the speed will be much slower than a real local disk!

Enjoy!
