FTP (File Transfer Protocol) FAQ

What is FTP?

FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network, such as the Internet. You can use FTP to exchange files between your computer and other computers on the Internet. This is the method you use to send your web page files to your account space on the RollaNet server so they can be viewed on the Web.

Why can't I get connected to the RollaNet server using FTP?

The most common cause of failing to connect to the RollaNet server when using FTP software is using an incorrect server name when configuring the software. The correct server name is ftp.rollanet.org. At one time our members were able to connect using just rollanet.org as the server name; however changes in the configuration of our equipment now require the server name to be ftp.rollanet.org.

Your RollaNet userid and password are also required to connect to the RollaNet server. Make sure you are using your userid, not your email address, and that both the userid and password are entered without spaces or capital letters.

How do I send web pages up to the Internet?

You will need to FTP your page(s) out. The main page needs to be saved as index.html. The address of your page will be www.rollanet.org/~userid. Windows generally comes with a program called WS_FTP that you can use to put your page on the internet. Open it up and enter the following information. Host name:ftp.rollanet.org; Host Type:Automatic detect; Userid: the userid you were assigned with your account (same for the password). Click Ok and you will be connected to your Rollanet account. On the left is your computer. Navigate using the arrows and double clicking on folders until you find your web page. On the right is your Rollanet account. You will need to click the MkDir button and name it public_html (if it does not already exist). Open that folder up and then highlight your webpage on the left. Click the right arrow and it will copy to your Rollanet account. You should now be able to view your web page online.

How do I post pictures on auction sites such as Ebay?

First, Rollanet does not have anything to do with auction sites. We will provide you with web space, as we do all customers, that you can use to post your pictures. This information provided is intended to assist customers; however, auctions sites are not a supported topic. That stated, here are a few tips.

  • Have your picture scanned in the way that you want it.
  • You will now need to upload your picture to your web space. You can download a FTP program such as WS_FTP that you can use to put your pictures on the internet.
  • Once your image is on the Web, you need to add the exact URL of your image in the appropriate field they provide on their form.
