"We're excited to be pushing the boundaries of 3-D and computer technology to tell our stories in the best possible way," said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios." Sony Pictures Film Noir Thriller Dark Country Takes 3-D Cinematography to New Levels
Thomas Jane and Geoff Boyle had been exposed to the Silicon Imaging camera technology during their recent Sci-Fi action feature film Mutant Chronicles and were already keen on shooting with SI-2K. Sony Pictures hired 3-D specialists, Max Penner and Tim Thomas of ParadiseFX to help bring the feature to life. They had just completed developing a 9-camera 360-degree rig using the Silicon Imaging cameras and were able to design a stereo beam splitter rig into a MK-V-AR Steadicam with variable interocular control and another rig with fixed interocular for hand-held shooting. The Steadicam-AR rig was used to perform dynamic tracking shots with auto-leveling, moving the cameras from a high mode of 8-feet to ground level in one second. "The physical size of the Silicon Imaging 3-D rigs completely redefine the scope and potential of 3-D cinematography," says Director of Photography Geoff Boyle. "The true revolution is in the visual language and stylistic choices which can now be used, with shots that have never been seen in a 3-D movie before. Had we used any other camera system, there would have been nothing new to see, it would have looked like any other 3-D film shot in the past 50 years. To bring a thriller car-chase movie like Dark Country to life, we simply couldn't make those compromises." "Dark Country is a film that I wanted to express in a manner that remains true to the stylistic choices of film noir, while delivering an immersive reality and visceral experience that only the next generation of 3-D cinematography could provide," says Dark Country director/actor Thomas Jane. "Every medium brings a life of it's own to the story-telling process, and with Dark Country, I wanted audiences to be there, to be in the car with the characters, and make the story their own with a heightened sense of physical contact never experienced before. The mobility and physical expression we were able to achieve with the Silicon Imaging camera rigs truly transformed my personal vision into a living and breathing visual reality." At NAB 2008, Silicon Imaging will be demonstrating a technology preview of the industry's first integrated 3-D stereoscopic digital cinema camera system. It will enable filmmakers to view, adjust and shoot in-context of a live 3-D stereoscopic effect through an intuitive camera control interface complete with metadata capture, visualization and recording. "Thomas Jane has set the new standard for live action Stereo 3-D production with Dark Country," says Ari Presler, CEO of Silicon Imaging. "Today, a great deal of time in 3-D production is spent focused on shooting and editing two of everything and trying to determine if the camera setup will result in the desired stereo effect. Our next-generation 3-D systems will give cinematographers an unprecedented level of visualization and post workflow control while hiding the complexity of on-set operation. It will show exactly how the 3-D shot will look as it's being captured." Dark Country 3-D is currently scheduled for summer release. Silicon Imaging's 3-D digital cinema camera systems will be demonstrated with sample footage at NAB 2008, booth SL10608. |

James Cameron in the 3rd Dimension
"A 3-D film immerses you in the scene, with a greatly enhanced sense of physical presence and participation," said Cameron. "I believe that a functional-MRI study of brain activity would show that more neurons are actively engaged in processing a 3-D movie than the same film seen in 2-D." "When most people think of 3-D films, they think first of the gimmick shots, objects or characters flying, floating or poking out into the audience. In fact, in a good stereo movie, these shots should be the exception rather than the rule." "Watching a stereo movie is looking into an alternate reality through a window. It is intuitive to the film industry that this immersive quality is perfect for action, fantasy, and animation. What's less obvious is that the enhanced sense of presence and realism works in all types of scenes, even intimate dramatic moments. Which is not to say that all films should be made in 3-D, because the returns may not warrant the costs in many cases, but certainly there should be no creative reason why any film could not be shot in 3-D and benefit from it." " I plan to shoot a small dramatic film in 3-D, just to prove this point, after Avatar. In Avatar there are a number of scenes that are straight dramatic scenes, no action, no effects. They play very well, and in fact seem to be enhanced by the stereo viewing experience. So I think this can work for the full length of a dramatic feature. However, filmmakers and studios will have to weigh the added cost of shooting in 3-D against the increased marketing value for that type of film. In the future world shown in Avatar all display devices, including handheld devices and even photos, are all in 3-D. Read the entire article here. |

Fraunhofer's Kolibri Cordless Sensor Snaps 3-D Images on the go
The device, which is no larger than a shoebox and weighs only one kilogram, is capable of producing images via a wireless connection to a laptop computer in a matter of seconds. Developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, Germany, the sensor has applications across many sectors, including medicine. Explaining how it, the Kolibri Cordless, works, Dr Gunther Notni, IOF head of department, said: “It consists of two cameras with a projector in the centre. The two cameras provide a three-dimensional view, rather like two eyes. The projector casts a pattern of stripes on the objects. The geometry of the measured object can be deduced from the deformation of the stripes.” Its usefulness to the medial profession was also explained by Notni: “Patients who snore often need a breathing mask when they sleep. To ensure that the mask is not too tight, it has to be specially made for each patient. Our system enables the doctor to scan the patient’s face in just a few seconds and have the breathing mask made to match these data.” |

University of Oregon Use View-Master® Reels for Sustainability Campaign Source: Jill Aho writing for The Daily Emerald.com. According to the Oregon Daily Emerald, students may have seen animated piles of garbage roaming the University of Oregon campus as part of RE.act, an Allen Hall Advertising campaign. The "monsters" are an effort to inform students about the University's commitment to sustainability. "All the stuff the monsters are wearing came out of our recycling," said AHA Public Relations Director Dani Metz. The monsters are part of a larger campaign AHA designed for Steve Mital, the University's sustainability director, to raise awareness about sustainability and promote recycling. AHA is also planning to unveil a View-Master® campaign in the next few weeks to give students a chance to see what the campus could look like if sustainability efforts are stymied. AHA is designing reels to go in the View-Master® viewers, Fisher-Price® toys which hold round reels, usually of movie stills, that can be viewed and turned. AHA hopes the View-Master® campaign will show students that the choices they make have an effect on the campus as a whole and will provide a call to action. "We're working for the greater good," said Tyler Kirsch, co-project director for the campaign. |

Björk Premieres Amazing Wanderlust Video, Preps 3-D Version for DVD Release
Björk’s latest video for Wanderlust, taken from 2007’s Volta, was recently released in 2-D to help ease the anticipation of the forthcoming 3-D version. The video, which was produced by San Francisco’s Encyclopedia Pictura, features Björk suited in a wooly yellow cap and brown dress, floating down the river on a yak in what seems to be a Himalayan landscape. Sounds a little strange but as always with Björk, it gets weirder. Björk’s backpack then morphs into a clay döppelganger, which results in a short period of grappling between the two. She is then coaxed to the edge of a waterfall by a mysterious bearded demon. Aside from the bizarre storyline, the video is a visual showstopper. And it should be, considering it took over nine months to create, and the production costs stretched past the $100k mark. Encyclopedia Pictura incorporated the use of live-action puppetry, claymation and computer-generated imagery to create the costumes, characters and landscape for the video. The seven-minute masterpiece was released in 3-D on April 14 in DVD format along with a copy of the remixed Wanderlust single and a pair of 3-D glasses. |

Coolidge Corner Theatre Presents Thrilling 3-D Film Festival
May 2 through 8, The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA. is presenting classic 3-D films of the 50s popping off the giant screen. The Coolidge presents these films as only a classic cinema can, in newly restored, 35mm prints featuring polarized 3-D. This process requires two film prints to be projected side-by-side onto a silver screen, a complex set-up that is significantly different that the "red and blue" anaglyph system, allowing for a much clearer 3-D effect, more colorful films and the effect is seen wearing clear 3-D glasses that won't cause eye-crossing headaches. This format was used for making most of the big-budget studio 3-D films and is, fundamentally, the system-of-choice today. 3-D Film Festival Schedule House of Wax Beauty and Terror meet in your seat...as every thrill of its story comes off the screen right at you in NaturalVision 3 dimension!! Vincent Price stars in the undisputed king of all 3-D films, a classic horror tale of a wax artiste driven mad by his double-crossing partner. Now instead of manequins, his wax museum is filled with the corpses of his victims! House of Wax uses lavish set-design and color, eerie make-up effects, and a truly iconic paddle-ball scene to bring to life everything the 3-D had to offer. Ironically, director Andre deToth had only one eye - and never experienced his own film in 3-D! The screening also includes a Bugs Bunny short. 1 hour 38 minutes. Dial M for Murder Kiss By Kiss...Supreme Suspense Unfurls! This 1954 Hitchcock classic is a tense, heart-pounding thriller that is considered one of the director's all-time best. Based on the devilishly clever play, Dial M for Murder stars Ray Milland as a diabolical ex-tennis pro who intends to murder his wife (Grace Kelley). But when his plan goes awry (one word: scissors!), he cooks up an even better plan-B...and it would have worked if it weren't for that pesky inspector. While shot in 3-D, the craze had passed by the time the film was released and most theaters played the film in the regular old flat version. It wasn't until a 1980 reissue that audiences were able to see the original version, and realize Hichcock's masterful use of the format. Since the film takes place in mostly a single room, the 3-D effects are used not to shock (except in one notable scene), but to expand the feel of the set and really put you IN the picture. In other words, you're right there next to Grace Kelley. Not a bad place to be... 1 hour 55 minutes. Kiss Me Kate MGM presents Hollywood's first important big musical in 3-D on our Panoramic Screen with miraculous stereophonic sound and color, too! The first 3-D musical is a classic MGM production of the Cole Porter musical. Fred (Howard Keel) and Lilly (Kathryn Grayson) are a divorced pair of actors who are brought together for a production of The Taming of the Shrew. Of course, the couple seem to act a great deal like the characters they play... A fight on the opening night threatens the production, as well as two thugs who have the mistaken idea that Fred owes their boss money and insist on staying next to him all night. The film also features Ann Miller, who nearly steals the film with her version of "Too Darn Hot", and a young Bob Fosse, who also appears in the dance number for "From This Moment On". 2 hours. The Creature from the Black Lagoon The Creature from the Black Lagoon It Came from Outer Space Note: The Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space will be presented in the anaglyphic 3-D format. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is located at 290 Harvard St. in Brookline, MA. |

A California gold stereocard sold for $787 with 16 bids. Title of the card is The Side of the Mine Peak, New Almaden. The image shows a bearded man standing on a wooden structure tipping a wheelbarrow. We presume that the pile at the left is a result of this action. Everything seems tentative. The neglect of the pile against the wooden frame structure is a metaphor for the risks inherent in the gold mining trade. On left: "C.E. Watkins, PACIFIC COAST." On right: "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1867, by C.E. WATKINS, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Northern District of California." The backmark reads, "Paris International Exposition, 1969. The First Prize awarded to the United States by the Committee on Photographic Landscapes, received by C.E. Watkins, and the only Medal for California views, 425 Montgomery Street, San Fransisco."

macro stereo photography. Kesner explains, "Using
a specialized RBT macro stereo camera I am able
to capture subjects that are normally overlooked.
While most people take a walk down a forest path
and look up at the trees and mountain vistas,
I keep my head down looking at the ground searching
for that caterpillar crawling on a log. I turn
over rocks, look in the crevices, and generally
seek out the areas that most people avoid and
I am quite often rewarded and occasionally rewarded
quite well. It is some of those images that I

What
do Hannah Montana, Missy Elliott, U2 and Björk
all have in common? Besides the obvious, er, musical
similarities, they have all had a hand in their
own form of stereoscopic 3-D music videos.
It
was all the rage in the 1950s, the newest film
format that would change Hollywood: films in the
THIRD dimension, with the action popping right
off the screen and into your lap. Audiences flocked

a world of cinema that they had never seen before.
