Consumer Electronics Association Forms 3-D Video Discovery Group CEA’s announcement comes on the heels of a similar announcement from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, who plan to hold a confab on Aug. 19 in Los Angeles to develop a standard in the production of 3-D video. The organization, which is a standards setting body for audio-video production, plans to announce its strategy within six months. An industry standard for the delivery and presentation of 3-D video to the home could help accelerate the market for 3-D video use and prevent potential interoperability problems, according to CEA. “Currently movies are being produced and shown in 3-D in cinemas with advances in digital cinema improving the experience,” said Brian Markwalter, CEA vice president, Technology and Standards. “Pre-packaged content and games have the storage and processing power to deliver 3-D video and televisions are available today that can render 3-D content. Standards ensuring 3-D content is usable to the maximum extent by consumers will benefit the industry.” Samsung and Mitsubishi are selling “3-D-ready” HDTV sets using DLP technology from Texas Instruments. IBM, Philips and LG Electronics are also involved in developing the technology. |

Tasteful Temptations - The Erotic 3-D Photography of Larry Ferguson
This special edition portfolio collects the most sensual, exploitive and charismatically playful 3-D images created by critically acclaimed photographer Larry Ferguson featuring a variety of indepentently erotic models and daring amateurs. The book is a limited edition of 1,000 hand-numbered and signed copies. Renowned 3-D legend Ray Zone worked on the 3-D images in the book. He writes, "After working on these images I have to say that I am completely blown away by the quality of Larry's nude stereography. The images of the models are inherently stereographic, made for 3-D, and they tease the erotic imagination in a manner that is both highly charged and tasteful. There is also a brilliantly erudite command of the medium which lends the images a reflexive subtext that is slyly humorous in satirizing the voyeuristic impulse itself. The humanity as well as the beauty of Larry's alluring women is readily apparent along with a very sweet vulnerability. I am grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in producing stereography of such fine quality." We agree! This is "Must See 3-D!™" The full page 3-D images are printed on heavy-gloss photo quality paper and bound in a heavy-stock paper cover. Some images are full color anaglyphs and some in black-and-white anaglyphs. There is also one drift-method stereo pair on page one.
A pair of 3-D anaglyphic glasses is included with the book. The book is available while supplies last on the Shh3d Web site. You can also contact the publishers at the following address: Shh! Productions Visit the 3-D Review archives Web page for more articles about titles available from Shh!

Autodesk Introduces Stereoscopic 3-D Filmmaking Software at SIGGRAPH
The announcement underscores continued interest in stereoscopic 3-D filmmaking, which is a big topic at the conference. Autodesk previewed Maya 2009, the latest version of its 3-D computer animation software, and Toxik 2009, the new compositing system version. Both include stereoscopic tools. Additionally, the company presented a technology demonstration of its Lustre color grading software with stereo capabilities. Sebastian Sylwan, the company's senior film and television industry manager, said, "The key is the stereo tools are available at any point in your pipeline, perfectly integrated. The more stereo is not another toolset to be learned, but rather it is more integrated in the existing toolset than the more unencumbered the creative expression will be." Some of the new features were developed closely with customers. For example, Dreamworks Animation had a hand in the 3-D toolset. "We developed tools (for use with Maya) in conjunction with Autodesk," said Phil McNally, global stereoscopic supervisor at Dreamworks Animation. "Initially the way it worked is we had a requirement for stereo moviemaking tools, such as a way to see 3-D while working in Maya. Now they are incorporating that in their software. There is a broader appeal as more people are producing 3-D movies." Maya is in use at Dreamworks Animation on its 2009 release Monsters vs. Aliens. Autodesk's new software versions of Maya and Toxik are slated for availability in October. |

by Joe Barkovich - Courtesy of The
Welland Tribune, Ontario, Canada It's Welland as never seen before. Well, by these peepers that is. Welland in 3-D photography. Images captured by a 1950s era 3-D camera. Saved for posterity for viewing on ... a View-Master®. How to describe them? Breathtaking. Dizzying. Mesmerizing. Beautiful. That's without exaggeration. They caught my eye at the 150th anniversary reunion held last month. Ron Lasovich, 74, was the photographer. He was in his 20s when the photos were taken with his View-Master® Personal® Stereo Camera. His fascination for stereo photography grew out of fondness for his View-Master®, a Christmas gift back in the late 1940s. He was 12 at the time. Remember the View-Master®? Sure you do. As things turned out, Ron loved taking 3-D photos of Welland and Crowland. He has an amazing collection. I've put hours into looking at one reel after another showing many stunning images on the View-Master® Ron graciously let me use. For someone with a fascination about his hometown, what an experience this was. Ron amassed a collection of hundreds and hundreds of images. One taken in the mid-1950s on King Street around Merritt Park, looking south, is breathtakingly beautiful. It captures a spectacular canopy provided by trees on both sides of the street. Nothing at all like present day. Then there is Ron's fascination with our bridges. Main Street bridge appears in many shots. The beauty of 3-D comes through in how real-life images appear. In this case, Ron has a fascination with height. Many photos were taken looking up the bridge columns. Gaze at them too long and you begin to feel dizzy. Really. What an effect. Other images show Main Street Bridge when it was being painted from black to the colour it is today. One shows a sign in the foreground with the words: Painting -Proceed at Own Risk. It appears so close you are tempted to reach out and touch it. Many other images were taken from bridges, the old Welland South bridge most prominent for Ron's photography. He wasn't worried about hitching a ride as the bridge deck was raised for approaching canal traffic in order to get his shots. The results were certainly worth the effort -and the risk. "I was in my early 20s, you know what you're like at that age," Ron says. "It was a matter of timing, being there when the siren went and the gates starting descending. By that time I was on the deck, then climbing to the bridgemaster's cabin with my camera around my neck. I said to him, 'Do you mind if I take 3-D pictures of Welland?' What could he say?" Some of the more stunning pictures from that elevation show the laker Hochelaga as it approached the railway swing bridge, reached it, then left it behind. Beautiful. There are pictures of Ron's old stomping grounds, Beatrice Street where the family lived and the Maple Leaf Park section of Crowland. Good pictures of Maple Leaf School, Sts. Peter and Paul School, both now parts of Crowland's storied past. Pictures of what appear to be a gazillion bicycles in the bike rack outside St. Pete's. Images of a group of boys from the old 'hood, clutching baseball mitts in their hands. What great slides. Welland's downtown is part of the collection, too. Unforgettable is an image of the corner of East Main and King streets and a showcase window from downtown icon, the Ross store. Two window shoppers are looking at one of the well-dressed mannequins in that display. Again, so life like, so real. And how's this for nostalgia? Shots of the marquee of the Capitol Theatre, bold letters boasting about the twin bill: James Dean in East of Eden, and Van Heflin and Aldo Ray in Battle Cry. Also visible is a bright green awning with the name Rosbergs. At the other side of the theatre, the grand Reeta Hotel. Ron says he did most of his 3-D photography from 1951 to 1961. "I was hooked on 3-D, it was all I thought about," he says. "It made everything so life like and so real. When you looked at images of people, they looked like they were from a wax museum." Ron's 3-D collection deserves public attention. Maybe there are others like it, too. When Welland Historical Museum is looking for new exhibits, it may want to focus on this outstanding collection of Welland and Crowland in 3-D photography. It's awesome. Editor's Note: The Welland Historical Museum will be staging an exhibit based on this collection later in the year. |

InTru3D Brand™ Introduced by Dreamworks and Intel
At the Intel Developers conference held in August, the company reaffirmed their deal with DreamWorks Animation. Jeffrey Katzenberg, the co-founder and CEO of the studio demonstrated what their joint venture is producing. No new information on the deal was presented beyond the official declaration of the brand’s name. Intel is calling the joint venture “InTru 3D™.” Audiences on hand were treated to remastered 3-D clips from Kung Fu Panda. They were also given a chance to see advance clips from DreamWorks Animation’s next feature, Monsters vs. Aliens. The show was not the nostalgic 3-D of the 1950’s. There were no cardboard glasses or fuzzy edges. There was no visually triggered nausea or headache. State of the art glasses matched with projection technology and graphic rendering delivered what’s been called, “an immersive experience” for the audience. Major Hollywood directors from James Cameron to Steven Spielberg are working on 3-D projects right now. Disney’s Pixar has pledged all future animation titles with the first being 2009’s Up offered in 3-D. DreamWorks Animation also has 3-D movies in the pipeline. Many of Hollywood’s biggest names think 3-D movies will be a big part of the movie industry’s near-term evolution, but maybe none are greater supporters than Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg is a passionate advocate for the next generation technologies. In March, he told a Las Vegas convention audience “today’s 3-D innovations are nothing less than the greatest innovation that has happened for all of us in the movie business since the advent of color.” As part of that deal, Intel is providing advanced processors and multi-core chips specially adapted by Intel engineers for animation and 3-D rendering. DreamWorks, in turn, is converting its entire movie making computing infrastructure to Intel base environments. "We will be working together to generate new computer animation from the ground up," said Renee James, head of Intel’s software and solutions group. |

3-D Blu-Ray could be here by 2012 At an inaugural taskforce meeting on August 19 at USC in Los Angeles, the taskforce's work statement included developing a 3-D Blu-ray standard to enable home Blu-ray player viewers to have a stereoscopic 3-D viewing experience of a Blu-ray movie. A 3-D Blu-ray disk would have two channels of content on it: one for rthe left eye and one for the right eye. A potential 3-D viewing device could be a visor headset or a TV with some kind of 3-D assist. The processing of the 2-channel encoded information on a 3-D Blu-ray disk could be done in a Blu-ray player or in the actual viewing device. There are companies such as TDVision Systems developing a 3-D Blu-ray technology. A 3-D Blu-ray viewing experience could be available by 2012. |

3-D Entertainment Distribution hires Patricia Brandino as Vice President of Film Sales
"Patricia is a highly experienced and accomplished industry professional. Her knowledge of IMAX theatre exhibition and track record as the head of distribution for National Geographic's IMAX films, not to mention her long-standing relationships with many of the industry's key players, make her a great asset to our company," said Francois Mantello. "We are delighted to have such an established personality complement our existing team at a time when we are actively expanding our business activities and services." "I am thrilled by the opportunity to play an active role in 3-D Entertainment Distribution's business growth in north America," said Patricia Brandino. "The company has distinguished itself since its inception with an original and undisputedly highly successful underwater film series that fully takes advantage of the 3-D giant screen medium." Prior to joining the company, Brandino was with international television distribution company Minds Eye International as Managing Director, and before that with Utah-based Destination Cinema Inc. in the position of Director of Film Distribution for the National Geographic IMAX theatre films Forces of Nature (2004), Roar: Lions of the Kalahari (2003) and Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West (2002), which have drawn millions of viewers. Brandino began her career in the giant screen industry 18 years ago as Director, Sales and Marketing at the Saskatchewan Science Centre's IMAX theatre. She subsequently launched the National Geographic IMAX theatre facility at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria BC in 1998. The giant screen cinema industry association recognized this tremendous achievement the following year with the Best Theatre Launch Award at its annual conference. 3-D Entertainment Distribution's portfolio of ocean conservation-based films includes the IMAX theatre releases Ocean Wonderland (2003), Sharks 3-D (2005) and Dolphins and Whales 3-D (2008) presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau and narrated by actress and environmentalist Daryl Hannah. The first two titles have grossed over $56 million theatrically and continue to play in the U.S., while the newly released Dolphins and Whales 3-D has already generated $8.3 million in gross receipts in its first six months ($4.3 million domestically). 3-D Entertainment is currently in post-production on its first feature length film, Oceans 3-D: Voyage of a Turtle (85 minutes), which will hit Digital 3-D Cinemas in 2009. The company also announced earlier this year that it has started developing a new 42-minute film for IMAX 3-D theatres about sea turtles for a 2010 release. |

The two innovators of the PACE/Cameron Fusion system, participated in the panel discussion via a Skype video call from Los Angeles where Cameron continues production on the upcoming 3-D feature Avatar. Pace served as Director of Photography for Avatar. The 3-D Day included two topic panels combined into one discussion, New Dimensions for 3-D: How Digital 3-D Will Shape Movie Production and Distribution During The Next 20 Years and New Technology Driving Digital 3-D. Cameron and Pace talked about the realities of the technology, its integration and the financial impact of stereoscopic film making. Pace and Cameron started working together on the 1988 film The Abyss. In 2001, Cameron was determind to build a film franchise universe, similar to George Lucas' Star Wars, approaching Pace to help him develop "the holy grail" of cameras. The challenge was to design a stereoscopic acquisition system to reinvent the entertainment experience by providing imagery that mimics human experience. The two accomplished this feat by throwing out the mathematics that previously drove and hindered 3-D production, replacing it with the first camera in the Fusion System line. Pace's credits include Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds concert film, U2 3-D, Avatar, Final Destination 4, Wild Ocean 3-D, Ghosts of the Abyss, Aliens of the Deep, Spy Kids 3-D and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D. The Pace company is also noted for trail-blazing 3-D sports exhibitions with three live 3-D broadcasts using systems via fiber and satellite links in partnership with the National Basketball Association. |

Stereo Pictures Offers 2-D to 3-D Motion Picture Conversion
Stereo Pictures co-president Phillip Rhee says the company is poised to "convert libraries of motion picture titles to provide the content needed to move the 3-D business to theatres, homes and mobile devices." New titles and the games market are also in the mix. The company has started technology deployment and recently brought in new partners including former Warner Bros. executivess James R. Miller and Dan Romanelli. Miller served as president of Warner Bros. worldwide theatrical business operations and Romanelli was president of Warners worldwide consumer products. Stereo proprietary technology developed at its research and development site in Korea is designed to convert any digital format to a 3-D format. Offices are to be located in service bureaus in Los Angeles and Korea. The company estimates that it could convert a title in as little as a month and a half after the service bureaus are operational. |

A set of 116 vintage Hollywood Realist slides sold for $667 with 27 bids. The sale included a David White Realist red button stereoscopic viewer with Realist carrying case and 116 glass-mounted slides. The photographs were taken in the early 1950s. The slides are a collection of personal photos showing writers, musicians, film directors and actors who worked in Hollywood at that time. This set belonged to Lisa Gerrard's uncle. She found it in his closet three years ago when cleaning out their house after her aunt passed away. Most of the slides are labeled and appear to have been taken by someone who worked in the Hollywood entertainment industry. That person may have been her uncle, who was a pianist and worked in Hollywood from 1951 until his death in 1995. More likely, the photographer was one of his friends in the film industry. You may recognize some of the people depicted in the slides, but there are only two celebrities that were known to Gerrard, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Crosby appears clearly on five slides. Armstrong is visible, but partly obscured, on one slide. Other photos depict actors, film directors, film producers, writers and musicians, most of whom are not household names, but many of whom worked closely with celebrities. For example, Barney Dean, who wrote comic material for Bob Hope. All the slides are personal photos, taken of family and friends. They are not publicity shots, and the seller doubts they have ever been displayed publicly. Here is a sampling of the subject matter:
Whether or not you collect vintage photography equipment or Hollywood memorabilia, this is an unusual and interesting set. The set sold to a buyer in Germany.
A rare View-Master® viewer sold for $126.87 with 19 bids. This uncommon View Master® viewer was introduced in the early 1990s as a special promotion for the Reunion Des Musees Nationaux in Paris. It is packaged with one reel of Paris. It is sometimes known as the "cat" viewer due to it's unique shape. The auction featured the viewer in it's original packaging.
A box of vintage Polaroid 3-D glasses sold for $8.50 with two bids. Polaroid Model 729 3-D Viewers. These are glasses for watching stereo 3-D slides or movies. These glasses are new-old-stock and come six to a box. The glasses are green plastic with twin film polarizers. The Cambridge Mass. address for Polaroid lacks a Zip Code, so that dates these to pre-1963. The box carries 1941 and 1945 Canadian patent dates. |
