On
Location with View-Master® and Tru-Vue - Behind
the Scenes in the 1950s
The
Railroad Press Company has unearthed a real gem for those
interested in View-Master® and Tru-Vue history.
A television show produced in the 1950s featuring a behind
the scenes look at several View-Master® reels in production.
On Location with View-Master® and Tru-Vue -
Behind the Scenes in the 1950s is a well produced look
back at how the View-Master® company used puppets and
live action actors to create some of their most memorable
reels.
In 1951, Art Baker, host of You Asked for It, televisions
most popular request show for almost two decades, visited
with Lee Green, a producer for View-Master®. Lee gives
a behind the scenes look at the details and work involved
in making of the View-Master® 20,000 Leagues Under
The Sea three-reel set. The television show goes behind
the scenes to show the characters to be photographed in
3-D are created using puppets, how the reel images are determined
to show the highlights of the classic story and much more.
To keep production costs down, the puppets had interchangable
heads and arms so that the same body could be reused over
and over. Sculptors would carve wooden heads with different
expressions to fit the action needed for each 3-D scene.
The original television show was broadcast in black and
white, but special color scenes have been inserted from
the actual View-Master® 20,000 Leagues Under the
Sea 21-scene set. The film transfer quality of the video
and the audio presented on the VHS tape that we reviewed
is outstanding, even though the original film is over 50
years old.
The highlight of this tape is an in depth interview with
Hollywood stuntwoman Inaborg Green. She, like her husband
Lee, was very active in producing reels for View-Master®
and Tru-Vue. Her career and home movies taken on location
offer insight into what it takes to make those dazzling
stereoscopic reels. In fact, the television show used 16mm
film provided by their subjects for most of the behind the
scenes film used for the broadcasts.
Inaborg Green worked on several View-Master® productions
including Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe, The Easter Story
and several others. She mentions her favorite production
was Rin Tin Tin and also mentions working on The Lone Ranger
set. Many View-Master® fans will recognize the familiar
backgrounds used for some of the productions. Some of the
locations include the Pacific Coast Highway in California,
Botanical Gardens and more. Another interesting fact is
that some of the costumes worn by the actors are the same
costumes worn in classic Hollywood movies. For example,
you find out that the Robin Hood costume worn by the unidentified
actor on the View-Master® reels is the same costume
worn by Erroll Flynn in the movies.
According to The Railroad Press Company, a question arose
during the time they were assembling the videotape. There
is no record of the View-Master® production Mr. Green
shows. First reaction was they were never released. National
Stereoscopic Association president Mary Ann Sell, serving
as consultant, kept digging until she discovered the truth.
Mrs. Green also worked for Tru-Vue and failed to differentiate
between the two companies when she selected the films to
be shown in the interview.
The feature runs 28 minutes in black and white with color
segments. It is available on both DVD and VHS. All videotapes
have been transferred from original motion picture film
to professional video equipment for optimum quality. Each
VHS tape is recorded on Fuji Professional tape at standard
play speed and comes in a plastic case for dust protection.

Kids 3-D: Game Over
On
July 25, 2003, the Spy Kids and director Robert Rodriguez
launched family entertainment into an entirely revolutionary
dimension: the 3rd dimension. Introducing the new future
of high-tech interactivity, Miramax and Dimension Films
presents Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. The film uses the
very latest digital technology to weave 3-D images directly
into the Spy Kids' trademark espionage action, inviting
audiences of all ages to become part of the larger than-life
excitement on the silver screen.
Rodriguez,
whose groundbreaking inventions and boundless imagination
have already changed the way movies are made, is now taking
another leap forward by bringing back the excitement of
3-D in his own inimitable pioneering style. Spy Kids
3-D: Game Over represents the first fundamental change
to 3-D technology since its heyday in the 1950s. For the
first time in decades, a new generation will experience
the thrill of putting on special glasses that transport
them right into the middle of the exhilarating action and
adventure.
Parents
who grew up loving 3-D classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's
Dial M For Murder and Andre DeToth's House of
Wax will now be able experience the thrill of the 3-D
experience as a family event. Rodriguez has pushed stereoscopic
3-D technology to the next level, incorporating up-to-the-minute
computer effects and his own specially designed high definition
3-D monitors and camera systems to create a fantasy world
in unprecedented detail.
Unlike
the more gimmicky 3-D spectacles of the past, Rodriguez
has created the very plot and fabric of this film with 3-D
in mind from the start. He has woven three-dimensional scenes
throughout the film, into the plot, making it part and parcel
of his high-flying storytelling.
This
HD/3-D technology comes to the fore as under-age agents
Juni and Carmen Cortez set out on their most mind-blowing
mission yet: journeying inside the virtual reality world
of a 3-D video game designed to outsmart them, as the awe-inspiring
graphics and creatures of gaming come to real life. Relying
on humor, gadgetry, bravery, family bonds and lightning-quick
reflexes, the Spy Kids must battle through tougher and tougher
levels of the game facing challenges that include racing
against road warriors and surfing on boiling lava in order
to save the world from a power hungry villain.
3,500
theatres across the U.S. will be equipped with special viewing
glasses for the release of Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
glasses that become part of the interactive fun -- making
it a major family event for kids that have never seen 3-D
and parents who have never seen 3-D like this.

been 10 years since the first of the "got milk?"
commercials appeared on TV. To celebrate the anniversary,
there's a new celebrity milk mustache poster featuring the
two young actors from Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Alexa
Vega and Daryl Sabara. Unfortunately the poster is not in
3-D. The poster is a tie-in to the 3-D movie. The Spy Kids
ad targets teen and young-adult audiences and is set to
debut this month to coincide with the movie's July 25 premiere.
The pair are shown in their spy gear with chocolate milk
mustaches, with the message: "It's like regular milk

nutrients active bodies need; whether you're out saving
the world or just doing your homework." Of course,
it ends with "got milk?"

Kid 3-D Monster Spree
Monster
Kid magazine issue No. 3, an online monster magazine,
features a selection of 3-D anaglyphic photos of classic
horror monsters. The anaglyphs were created from stereo
pair conversions made by Kerry Gammill, editor of the online
Monster Kid magazine.
The tedious conversion from 2-D to 3-D has resulted in
some outstanding "scareo-vision" depictions of
classic movie monsters including The Creature from the Black
Lagoon, both Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee as Dracula,
King Kong, Karloff as Frankenstein and The Mummy, a lifecast
of the late Peter Cushing and much more. The issue also
features the first downloadable Monster
Kid collectible 3-D trading card featuring The Mummy.
The Christmas 2002 issue of Monster Kid also features
a great 3-D
monster Christmas card featuring the Wolfman.
Monster Kid is modeled after the classic monster
magazines of the 1960s, such as Famous Monsters of Filmland.
Editor Kerry Gammill (Count Gamula) is presenting great
information and entertainment through Monster Kid. Kerry
Gammill is a talented artist whose work has appeared in
both Marvel and DC comics. Some of his work can be seen

3-D Film Expo Limited Edition Poster
The
World 3-D Film Expo created a special poster featuring reproductions
of classic 3-D films as one of the souvenir items for the
huge film festival coming Friday, Sept. 12 through Sunday,
Sept. 21 to the Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard
in Hollywood.
The 27" x 41" poster, designed by artist Matt
Spero, is available in two formats. The beautiful one-sheet
sized poster is available in a very limited edition Giclee
Print.
A Giclee Print is the highest quality print available today.
The word giclee is a French word meaning 'to squirt', which
is what an ink jet printer does. The process is digital
printmaking with a printer that uses variable size, microscopic
droplets of ink to create prints that cannot be duplicated
by other printing techniques. Because there is no visible
dot screen pattern the resulting image has all of the subtle
tonalities of the original art. Each dot may have over four
billion possible colors! This produces exceptional museum
quality prints on archival paper using archival inks.
Only 250 of these will be printed. Each print will be numbered
and signed by the graphic designer, Matt Spero. Cost of
the limited edition poster is $299. The regular edition
of the poster is priced at $19.95. Both items are available
for purchase online.
Detailed information about the festival, film schedule
and more can be found at http://www.3dfilmfest.com.
There is a printable version of the schedule on the Web

IMAX
Planning 3-D Sequels to Into the Deep and Space Station

IMAX
Corporation announced that, despite its recent emphasis
on re-purposed Hollywood films, it is still simultaneously
developing original Large Format 15/70 productions. In particular,
the company revealed that it is developing two 3-D sequels
to the underwater 3-D film Into the Deep, due to
release in 2005 or 2006; and to the 2002 blockbuster Space
Station 3-D, expected to debut in 2007 or 2008.
Directed by renowned undersea filmmaker Howard Hall, the
first Into the Deep film sets audiences adrift in
the unique ecological world of the kelp forest where the
interplay of colorful marine life is reminiscent of a carefully
choreographed ballet. In this underwater village of coral
and rock we witness fascinating behaviors: a male Garibaldi
tenaciously protecting its nest, a graceful giant starfish
that eats everything in its path, the frenzied mating ritual
of squid en masse and the unexplained chewing of kelp stalks
by playful sea lions. The magic of 3-D gives each viewer
of Into the Deep the best seat in the house and enables
them to share, in a personal way, an intimate experience
with the garibaldi, the octopus and the sea lion.
The first Space Station 3-D film is a strikingly
beautiful and technically challenging film epic. The film
is the first-ever IMAX 3-D film from space, Space Station,
is also available in a 2-D version, Space Station 3-D
is the story of the greatest engineering feat since landing
a man on the Moon: the on-orbit assembly of the International
Space Station, as it travels 220 miles above Earth at 17,500
mph.
Space Station 3-D is the first cinematic journey
to the International Space Station (ISS) where audiences
can experience for themselves life in zero gravity aboard
the new station. Transported by the magic of the IMAX technology,
the audience blasts off into space with the astronauts and
cosmonauts from Florida's Kennedy Space Center and Russia's
Baikonur Cosmodrome to rendezvous with their new home in
orbit 220 miles above Earth. Now people of every age and
language can work side by side with their space-walking
crewmates, building and inhabiting this unprecedented structure
in space.
Erotek
Dimensions 3-D DVD
Erotek
Dimensions is promoted as being the first adult 3-D
film on DVD. Erotek Dimensions includes 3-D and 2-D
versions, a 3-D installation guide and bonus materials.
The DVD uses the field sequential 3-D system. This means
to view the DVD in 3-D you must have compatible shutter
glasses. The DVD is playable on DVD players and is PC-compatible.
The DVD can be purchased separately for $19.95 or in a
special set that comes with two pairs of high performance
H3D wired shutter glasses, video synchronization controller,
RCA video cable, instruction manual and three IMAX 3-D DVDs
for $99.95.
The film is an erotic sci-fi parody starring Doria, host
of Playboy TV's Night Calls. The story takes place
in a cyber-science DNA laboratory. Using her computer, Doria
(the scientist) conjures up holographic partners to act
out her fantasies. Even the credits come at you in 3-D.
Doria's long legs are shown stretching out of the screen
as she watches the holographs.
Erotek Dimensions was mentioned in Playboy's April
2003 issue. This item is intended for mature audiences over
the age of 18.
