Cycle Costing in Early Design Phases - Abstract: The reduction
of product costs is crucial to the success of most manufacturing companies
of today. Product costs basically are caused by the expenses until shipment,
the expenses during the product lifetime, and the expenses due to disposal
and/or recycling at the end-of-life. Life-Cycle Costing as an important
method to estimate product costs of all life-cycle phases in early design
stages will be introduced. An overview will be given on tools commercially
available and under development. The European project 'TOPROCO' (Total
Product Life-Cycle Cost Estimation, Brite Euram #7314) will be presented,
as well as efforts undertaken by various German companies to develop environmentally
conscious products by taking life-cycle considerations into account.
